“What the fuck is wrong with you?” I interrupted, turning to glare between him and Alan.

“Nalani Stark, watch your damn—”

“I won’t watchshit!” I screeched, desperately wishing there was something in here for me to flip over. “Our family land, this business, thisbuilding, it’s been…. This wasoursand yousold it! For what, exactly? Please explain this to me.”

“I told you; your mother was sick—”

“So there were medical bills,so fucking what?!” I cried. “Get a payment plan, let them default, sell the cars, sell the houses, your goddamn boat, or, here’s a thought, ask for help!”

“Our reputation would have been ruined!”

“And what do you call this?!” I asked, waving my arms around at… nothing, I guess, to illustrate what wecurrentlyhad. “Do you thinkthisis going to be good for the family name, flushing the legacy down the toilet? Huh? Does our reputation feel intactright now?!”

“Let’s all just calm down,” Alan attempted, and I was quick to turn my glare on him alone.

“I most certainlywill not.You helped him flush my mother’s heritage down a toilet to protect his fucking pride and I’m supposed tocalm down?”

“All isn’t lost!” my father said, stepping around the table. “You heard the man. He’s offering an option that could save this family, assuming you might be—”

“If I do anything, it will be to preserve theJoycefamily claim,” I told him, unmoved by the obvious blow in my words. “And will make sure neither of youeverget your hands on it again.”

“Now you hold on, young lady. All he has is the land and the building, thiscompany—”

“Is fort-nine percent yours – the other fifty-one percent is me and my brother, and if you think for amomentthat Soren won’t be on my side when he finds this out, you are incredibly mistaken as to where his loyalty lies.”

His lips parted in surprise. “So you’d turn against your own father? Is that what I’m hearing?”

“What you’re hearing is that you have shit your last pair of britches whereNectaris concerned,” I snapped. “Between me and Soren having the controlling interest, and what I amsurewill be a very unhappy board, you can consider yourself relieved of duty,” I told him, grabbing my wasted coffee and heading for the door.

“Little girl, youcannotdo this!”

“Watch me.”

Just before I stepped out the door, he tossed one last jab in my direction. “You’re going to need my help when Orion Sterling kicks your ass out of this building!”

I turned to smirk. “I fail to see how that’s your concern anymore.”

“He’s abillionaire,Nala. Yes, you’re going to have to fuck him.”

I pushed out a sigh, balancing my overfilled wine glass as I dropped to a seat on the couch in Demetria’s office. She wasn’t the one who’d offered that insight though. That was her twin sister, Desiree, consulting via video call from her Vegas office.

Myfirststop after leaving theNectaroffices in a hot mess of rage was to the one person I knew forsurewould have my best interests at heart.

My lawyer.

I paid her entirely too well not to.

Once I’d bullied my way past her receptionist into an impromptu emergency meeting to explain the crisis at hand, she’d immediately called her sister.

This was an all-hands situation.

“This is…insane,” I mused, taking a deep gulp from the wine.

It was entirely too early, but when Demetria offered, I didn’t have the fortitude to turn it down.

Across from me, she shrugged. “It’s actually… not that extraordinary. When you have that kind of money, things move a little different.”
