“Is it really?” she asked, with a raised eyebrow that practically dared me to lie… but I couldn’t.

So instead of making something up, I hit her with, “I happen to think that us establishing our marital bond is one of the most vital things we can do.”

“Oh whatever.”

“I’m serious,” I insisted, planting my hands on the hard surface on either side of her monitor, leaning over it. “Do you think I’m joking?”

She scoffed. “I think, exactly as I said at the top of this conversation, that I do not have time for this. I have performance reviews to go over, inventory reports to assess, supply chain issues to find solutions for, actual work, despite what you seem to think.”

I frowned over her description of what was on her plate. “What’s your official title here again?”

“Head of operations,” she snapped. “Problem?”

“For me, no, just sounds like a heavy load.”

“One I’m more than capable of handling.”

“Which I don’t doubt,” I countered. “But most executive positions come with an assistant.”

“Ihavean assistant.”

“And are you delegating?”

“I am,” she replied. “Everybody around here is doing their job, I assure you. And it would be great if I could get back to mine. If you want to talk, we can do it at home.”

“Or… over lunch,” I suggested, still pushing the issue.

“I was planning to eat at my desk.”

“Change your plans then,” I said. “And Nala… that’s not a suggestion.”

“Kiss my ass.”

I smirked. “Now you know I gladly would,” I told her, prompting rolled eyes. “It’s lunch with your husband, not a fucking death sentence woman, damn.”

“You see it your way, I see it mine.”

“That’s cold.”

“Did you expect warmth when you took it upon yourself to interrupt my very busy day?” she asked, taking out her earbuds again to give me her full attention. Her eyes narrowed in genuine curiosity, waiting for my answer.

Actually… she had me there.

No, Ihadn’texpected her to be happy to see me. I’d expected exactly what I was getting — lots of attitude and annoyance over me showing up announced.

It was sexy.

I pushed away from the desk, walking around to her side of it as she watched, confused.

“What the hell are you doing?” she asked, as I removed my jacket and tie, and rolled up my sleeves.

“Cutting to the chase,” I answered.

I grabbed the arm of her chair, swiveling it so she was facing me before I kneeled in front of her.

“Orion, what is this?” she asked again, a little more desperately this time, but I wasn’t moved by her tone. I was focused on the fact that she was wearing a dress today, which made this a lot easier.

“Consider it a midday boost.”
