A little smirk spread over his lips. “Damn, you think that’s the only reason I’d come see you?”

“Only? No. Most likely…?”

He chuckled a little, shaking his head. “Believe it or not, that wasn’t my motive. But I do have to say… your throat is still available, no? And your ass—”

“Okay, I was trying to wind down,” I interrupted, shaking my head. “How can I help you?”

“That’s what I was explaining.”

“Orion.”

“Fine.” He laughed, then sobered back to the serious expression he’d worn before. “I was coming to see if you were okay.”

I raised an eyebrow. “Uhh… yeah. Why wouldn’t I be okay?”

“You tell me.” He shrugged. “You’re the one who went to the doctor this morning.”

Shit, I thought, eyes going wide before I could force my expression to remain neutral. Right before me,hisface changed too, from concern to…suspicion.

Shit.

“Nala… let’s not even play a game here,” he warned, stepping past me into the room to close the door. “What the fuck is going on?”

“How do you even know about that?” I asked, stalling. I knewexactlyhow. The security detail I’d been too panicky this morning to think about. “That’s private information.”

“Pretty sure the rules are a little different between husband and wife and besides that…like I said.Let’s not play games. Is there something I need to know about?”

“If there was, I’d let you know,” I snapped, turning away to storm across the room.

Intendingto storm across the room.

My decision to choose indignation as my shield backfired quickly. He grabbed my arm to turn me around, the same arm I’d gotten cut upon earlier that morning, triggering a wince.

Seeing my face made him drop his grip, but he knew something was up. Before I could stop him, he’d pulled up the arm of my robe, immediately zeroing in on the freshly changed bandage.

“Nala, stop fucking playing with me,” he growled. “What is this?!”

“First, you need to calm the hell down,” I warned, snatching away from him. I took a few steps backwards, putting some distance between us. “You’re already making it a bigger deal than what it really is.”

“I don’t think you get to decide that,” he countered, nostrils flaring. “Whyis your arm bandaged?”

“Because,” I countered. “I… had to have a little procedure this morning. Atinyprocedure. It’s silly to even call it aprocedure, honestly.”

“Honestly, I’m about to fucking snap if you don’t give me a real answer, real quick,” he growled. “A procedure forwhat?”

“To have my birth control removed,” I blurted, crossing my arms protectively around myself. “I… I had forgotten I had it. So I made it a priority, and it’s out now, and… that’s all.”

For a long moment… he didn’t say anything.

A tidbit I knew better than to take as a good sign.

He opened his mouth to speak, then must’ve thought better of whatever was about to come out, clamping a hand over his lips as he paced in a little back and forth.

And then, finally, in a terrifyingly calm tone, he spoke.

“I don’t believe you.”

My eyebrow shot up. “Excuse me?”
