“What the fuck do we do?” Cassius hissed, peering around the crumbling stone wall we were using as cover.

I thought fast. “We need a distraction.” Leaning down, I swiped a small rock from the ground and sent it hurtling through the air.

Heads turned in the direction it landed, but it wasn’t enough. Cass had caught on, though, and we moved closer, crouched down in the shadows, sending more rocks skittering in the same direction. We were moving much slower than I wanted, but if we rushed in now, we risked being outnumbered.

Still, we drew closer to Allan. Smoke from the fireworks obscured my vision, which was good because it meant that the others would have trouble seeing.

“Now,” I hissed to Cassius, circling my fingers. “We split up. I’ll go that way. Meet back here as soon as they’ve seen me.” He gave me a short nod, and we ran for it.

Coming to a stop at the far side of the courtyard, away from Allan, I curled my fingers around a rock and then smashed it against the stone wall next to me as hard as I could.

At the same time, there was a loud boom, and the courtyard lit up.

Fuck, yeah.

Mack, Winter, and Kinslee were on it, sending the Molotov cocktails right where we needed them, at exactly the right time. I darted back into the shadows, using my previous route to run from wall to wall. It took me under fifteen seconds to get back to where Allan was, and I leapt from behind, slamming the rag over his mouth while Cassius immobilised him. Wasting no time, I grabbed the syringe from my pocket and injected it into his neck, tossing the empty syringe to the ground when I was done.

We grabbed his limp body between us, moving as quickly as we could across the stubby grass, towards the van. Something inside me sent alarm bells blaring, but before my brain had time to work out what the fuck was happening, a knife whistled past my ear, and then Cade was there, swiping one of my knives from its sheath.

“Faster,” he said urgently.

Cassius’ gaze swung to his. “Going as fast as we can.”

Somehow, we made it to the van unscathed, and then we were on the move, the castle disappearing behind us, and Joseph and Allan bound and hooded and at our mercy.

TWO

We were utilising one of Mack’s warehouses for our interrogation, beginning with Joseph Hyde. Caiden and I were in the warehouse with him while Cassius, Weston, and Winter watched via a feed in the office.

Cade wasted no time in ripping the hood from Joseph’s head, and Joseph immediately kicked off.

“Untie me right now, you assholes! If this is some juvenile prank, I—”

Caiden punched him in the face, and I couldn’t help feeling a sense of satisfaction because if he hadn’t been Fallon’s brother, I would’ve done that and worse. He deserved everything he had coming to him, and the only reason I’d been holding back was because of her.

Joseph jerked against his restraints, and I realised I’d zoned out for a minute.

“…Untie me right now! The joke’s over.”

I slid one of my knives into my hand. “It’s not a joke.” Stepping forwards, I palmed the blade, and I had the pleasure of seeing Joseph’s face drain of colour.

“We want answers. You’d better start talking, otherwise, it’s going to hurt,” Caiden barked.

“What the fuck is this all about?” His voice was hoarse, trembling with fear as he realised what deep shit he was in.

Caiden got all in his face. “First question. Why did Christine pay you to split me and Winter up, and why was Granville involved?”

He glared back at Cade. “I’m not telling you anything.”

“Z.”

I was ready before Cade had even said the word. My knife sliced straight through the arm of Joseph’s hoodie and into his skin, blood blooming along the shallow cut. Hyde roared in pain, his eyes wide and glassy. “You cut me, you fucking sadist! What’s wrong with you?”

He deserved that and more, and I didn’t have time for his theatrics when we were limited for time and badly needed answers. “I barely scratched you. Next time, though, I’ll cut deeper if you don’t answer my friend’s questions.”

“Psycho bastard,” he muttered under his breath. I cut him a warning look, and he clamped his mouth shut.

“I’ll say it again.” Caiden straddled his chair, right in front of Joseph’s bound legs. “Why did Christine pay you, and why was Granville involved?”
