“An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind,” I whispered as the life drained from him. Looking down at his body, I felt nothing, only a sense of relief that he would never be able to hurt anyone again.

Creed turned to Joseph, and I watched as Joseph slowly straightened up, wiping his mouth. It was then that I realised that he’d just been sick. His whole body was trembling as he held up his hands. “I know when I’m beaten. I’ll give you all the information I have on my dad. All the info on everything you want. The business. You can have it. Just let me go.Please. I won’t take anything.”

Creed and Zayde both glanced at me. Zayde was fingering his knife, and Creed was casually wiping the streaks of blood from the flying weapon he’d used to slash Roland’s throat. What was I supposed to do? “You two decide.”

I realised then that I trusted them to make the decision that was best for us. Taking a step back, I closed my eyes.

I heard murmured voices and Creed calling someone’s name—Obie.

After that, there was a long silence, and then Zayde was wrapping me in his arms, his voice soothing in my ear. “It’s over now. You’re safe. I’ve got you.”

I was safe, but at what price?

Icouldn’t fucking breathe. Right in front of me, obscured by huge clouds of dust, was a huge, gaping hole in the Alstone Holdings offices. It was only the knowledge that I needed to stay strong for my girl that was keeping me standing.

“Zayde!”

There was a shout, and Fallon gasped, letting go of me as she turned towards the sound.

Caiden. Fucking hell. I’d never been so glad to see him in my fucking life. I took a step towards him, then another, and then he was barrelling towards me, with Cassius and Weston right behind him, all of them covered in dust and bits of rubble but alive and unharmed. Then they were fucking hugging me, and shock of all shocks, I was hugging them right back.

“We were so worried,” West breathed when we separated. “None of us knew what was happening outside. Dad worked out what was going on just in time, so we managed to evacuate the building. Except people got hurt.” He glanced at Caiden, who placed a hand on my shoulder.

“The ambulances are there now. Your dad, uh, he was injured. But he’s gonna be okay.”

My heart was pounding out of my chest.

“Zayde? Do you want to go to the hospital?”

It was then that I realised that Fallon was here, listening to our conversation. I held out my hand, pulling her into me. “Yeah. We should go.” Flicking my gaze back to Cade, I said, “Are you sure my dad’s gonna be okay?”

Cade nodded. “Yeah. Some of the rubble hit him. I think he might have a broken arm. But he’s okay. He wasn’t the only one to get hurt, either. My dad’s hurt, too. And Mack. But no one’s badly injured. We’re all alive.”

“He’s not.”

We all turned to where Cassius was pointing. Roland Hyde’s body was sprawled across the ground, the dust gradually settling over him, covering the bloodstains. Fallon curled into me, and I tightened my arm around her, dropping a kiss on top of her head. “He’s gone,” I said, too low for anyone else to hear. “He can’t hurt anyone else again.”

She looked up at me with a shaky smile. “I know. It was the right thing to do. I wish I hadn’t hesitated. It was just…”

“Hey. I would never expect you not to be conflicted, baby. You’re good. So good. My angel. So fucking pure, I don’t know how—”

Reaching up, she covered my mouth. “I love you. You think you have a black soul, but it’s not true. You’re a good man, Zayde Lowry. And I love you so much.”

Fucking hell. I wished more than anything that I could say the words back to her. Why was it so hard to admit it to myself? How fucking broken was I inside that I didn’t truly know how to love?

Footsteps sounded, and then more people were there, but I kept my eyes fixed on Fallon. “It’s okay. I know,” she whispered. “You don’t have to say anything. You don’t have to try and be anything you’re not. I love you the way you are.” She held my gaze, her arms wrapping around me, and suddenly, I could breathe again.

“Let’s get out of here,” I rasped around the tightness in my throat.

“Okay.”

“Rich boy! You owe me a new car.”

Mack’s voice carried through the open door, and as I entered his hospital room, I raised my brows at the sight of Caiden standing next to Mack’s bed, his arms folded over his chest, and James Granville right there next to him.
