I heard it a split second after she did. Whoever was coming for her was just on the edge of the woods.

The sound of Aria’s head smashing into a nose brought a grin to my face, but it quickly faded as I focused my attention on counting the number of assailants. So far, two. There could be more behind them, so I needed to incapacitate this guy immediately.

I studied my combatant for weapons. He didn’t have one out, foolish man. Didn’t he know he’d never beat an Aurora’s Girl without one?

The guy charged me, probably to avoid the same fate his friend had in Aria’s hands. I used his momentum to my own advantage, kicking out a leg as he ran at full speed and hitting him in a kidney. I may be short in stature, but my limbs are abnormally long and I’ve learned how to use my strengths.

The man doubled over, heaving for breath, and I took the opportunity to roundhouse kick him in the head. I didn’t often get to use that move, as it’s a little risky—someone fast enough could always grab my leg and gain control over me. But I could tell that in the guy’s current state I’d be much quicker than he could be. Honestly, despite all of his ridiculous muscle, this guy put up absolutely no fight.

But that’s when I saw it. He reached for his waistband and I knew he was going for a gun. With no time to waste, I kicked his hand and heard the snap of his fingers. He wouldn’t be shooting with that hand anytime soon.

The man screamed in agony, his pitch matching that of his companion. At the corresponding sound, I knew Aria was doing as well as I was.

I pulled out a pair of cuffs and slapped them on my perp’s wrists before confiscating his gun.

“Any other weapons on you?” I asked sweetly.

“Go to hell,” he spit at me, adding a string of expletives. Too bad he was much better at swearing than fighting.

I kicked his chest, though not with my full strength. I don’t even kick douchebags when they’re down, but I wanted him to sit down next to the tree and didn’t want to touch the disgusting ogre with anything other than my shoe.

Sirens wailed in the distance, telling me that the girls did indeed understand my message.

“Where are the rest of them?” Aria shouted, slamming a fist into her guy’s eye.

He was looking the worse for wear. One of his eyes was already swelling up and blood was gushing from his nose and possibly other parts of his face.

“Aria,” I said, warning her to calm down. She needed this, but she couldn’t kill the guy. She’d never be able to live with herself.

“I’ve got some cuffs. And then we can wait for the cops to take the garbage out,” I continued, moving closer cautiously. I kept an eye on my guy as well. He’d better not make a run for it.

Aria shook her head. “Not until he answers my question.”

Her foot shot out, connecting with his thigh, and the man fell to his knees with a groan.

“I don’t know where,” the guy whimpered, choking on his own blood.

His colleague’s eyes grew wide. I wanted to tell him that he was lucky I was the one who had caught him, but I kept my focus on Aria instead. She’d nearly lost control and I couldn’t let her take things too far.

“They got a call and left us in charge.” The guy’s voice grew weaker with every word.

“You’re lying!” Aria shouted. She drew her foot back to kick the guy again and I had to intervene.

“Aria!”

My yell startled her enough that she froze mid-kick.

“He’s not lying. I saw five cars shoot down the road right before I found you,” I said.

Aria barely gave me a glance before turning back to her battered captor.

“Where did they go?” she ground out as the sirens get louder.

I could’ve sworn I saw a look of relief on both men’s faces. They’d probably never been so thrilled about approaching cops before.

“I swear I don’t know.”

As he spoke I snapped my extra pair of cuffs on him. He was down. Aria had proved herself and it was time to let the cops take over.
