With a bang, the door crashed open and my heart stopped. They were here. Someone was here.

My soul called out for me to fight, but I couldn’t move a useful muscle. My neck was the only part of me free, so I swiveled as much as I could. If I couldn’t fight whatever was coming at me, at least I could see and learn as much as possible.

My eyes slowly began to adjust to the rainbow of lights and I saw men entering the room.

I pushed even harder at the fear as I counted. Two, four, five, seven, ten. Men were filling the room nearly as quickly as I could count.

I tried to make note of their sizes and any weapons they carried, facts that could save me if it weren’t for one thing. If I weren’t already tied up.

But I didn’t give up. I took in more clues. Something had to save me, because sometime my opportunity would come.

When I stopped scanning the group and focused on one at a time I noticed an odd detail. Over their heads, they all wore masks. One was painted all white, even the eyes, with bared teeth and bright red lips. Another was pockmarked, the lights glinting off of each divet. And yet another looked like a mangled scarecrow, his lips sewn shut.

The masks started to swirl together as the men began to surround me, moving closer with menacing steps. I tried not to show fear but could feel my back pressing into the chair as I shrank back from their advances.

What were they doing? Why were they here? What did they want?

No one had touched me. Yet. I had a feeling I might have to amend that statement as they moved closer.

I tried to mentally distance myself from the situation. What if this were happening to a victim, someone I was trying to save? What would I want her to do?

As hard as I tried, my senses were too overcome to think straight. I knew my panic was what they wanted. I was giving them exactly what they wished for, but I couldn’t stop.

As a masked face was thrust toward me, a shriek left my lips. I instantly wished it back, but my fear had won.

Cackles greeted my ears, making me wonder if they were using some kind of voice-changing device. That would be a clue. I had to focus on paying attention to every detail. I couldn’t lose myself to the terror.

Could the drugs be affecting me? Maybe this was all fake.

But the way my body clenched it felt real. Too real.

I realized with alarm that my breathing had become too rapid. My eyesight was blurring at the edges, warning me that I was about to pass out again. That was the last thing I should do.

In and out, I tried to will myself. My breathing followed, doing its best to heed my commands.

The men circled as they drew closer. Cleary they were messing with my head. Why else would they do this? They wanted to enjoy my fear and I gritted my teeth as I realized I was playing right into their hands.

I closed my eyes for a second to collect myself before realizing sight was the one thing I still had. I couldn’t shut them out, much as I wanted to.

My eyes flew open just as one of the men edged closer and closer, his tongue flicking from the mouth of his mask.

Shudders ran through me as his face came within inches of mine and I could do nothing.

No, not nothing. If he came any closer I could slam my head into his. Maybe even bite him.

As if he could read my thoughts, he drew back, the wicked smile on his mask matching his every move.

He moved to my side as two others advanced, taking his place. They were both still too far away for me to head butt so I waited, wishing they would come a little closer.

As I focused on them, a cold voice filled my ear unexpectedly. “You will find no way out. You’re ours now.”

Before I could even turn my head toward the voice I felt a warm wetness on my cheek. My stomach clenched in horror as I realized it was the man’s tongue, licking up the side of my face.

A guttural yell filled the room, my anguish too much to contain.

I tried to slam my head in the direction of the tongue but the man was long gone. His derisive laugh mixed with those of the other monsters surrounding me.

And then they were gone. As quickly as they’d filled the room, they vanished, the door slamming shut after them. The lights went with them, and pitch black now surrounded me again.
