I heard a gun cock near my ear. Just one? I was a little offended. Hadn’t my reputation preceded me?

I looked Detraux dead in the eyes.

“Not so smiley now?” he taunted, thinking the gun was the reason for the stern look on my face. Nope, that was purely because I was now almost in the zone. And these guys were about to go down.

“I’ve heard of you Aurora’s Girls,” Detraux said as he moved a step closer to me, emboldened by that one measly gun. “There are four of you here, correct?” His eyes raked over my body but I tried to ignore the disgust I felt. Emotions needed to be kept to a minimum so I could concentrate on taking Detraux down. “I have a feeling you will be a lovely addition to my collection.”

My stomach turned. A collection of women?

This guy was about to get it. I was going to make him eat his words. And then he was going to tell me everything he knew.

My foot shot sideways, meeting the gut of the man who held the gun and spinning him in Detraux’s direction.

“Get your finger off the trigger, you idiot,” Detraux screamed, causing all of his men to freeze.

Including the gunman. It was ridiculously easy for me to yank the gun out of his hand and I could have pointed it at Detraux, ending this whole thing. But instead I stuck it in the waistband of my pants, because where would have been the fun in that?

My foot shot out again, slamming into the neck of the gunman and he slid to the ground in a heap. He’d be out for a bit. Gunman typically meant right hand man. Definitely the guy I wanted to take out first.

Finally understanding that I was a threat, two of the other men came at me from either side at the same time. Before they could make a move I thrust out my right arm and left leg simultaneously, using my entire body to slam the men’s heads against either wall and causing them to fall back a few steps.

The move wasn’t quite strong enough to knock either out, at their size, but enough to make them more than a little off-kilter. They both continued toward me, but on shaky legs, looking more like newborn colts than slavers and killers.

They paused as one, shaking their heads as if to clear the fog, and then starting forward again. This time they advanced with more strength and speed, coming at me with arms already outstretched so that their long limbs would reach me well before my short ones could touch them. Their brute strength and size were the only things they had on me.

I knew waiting would be the hardest part of all of this but I did so, forcing myself to stay still until a split second before their fists hit me. I ducked forward into Detraux and then spun toward the men. At the last moment I jumped to get a good grip on both of their necks and sent their heads straight into the other’s fists, using their ridiculous strength against them. It was hard not to grin as they fell to the ground.

Detraux muttered four-letter words no mother would be proud of as he watched his henchmen fall. Both of them were sleeping not so peacefully.

I grinned again. Detraux had to know there was no way out for him. A sleazy guy like him relied on the muscles of others. He and his last henchman were no match for me.

But he made a move I didn’t expect. Before I could react, he threw the briefcase to the other guy and commanded, “Go!”

The henchman didn’t falter, running in the opposite direction and holding the briefcase like prized football.

Damn Detraux! I wanted that briefcase. But not as badly as I wanted him. I had to let something go and it couldn’t be Detraux.

I faced off with him, the gleam of victory already in my eyes. I knew he was no match for me and he knew it as well.

“I’ve been waiting a long time to meet you,” Detraux said with a slimy smile.

I knew what he was doing. He had nothing left so he wanted to get into my head. But I wouldn’t let him. This man had no idea who I was.

His arm shot out toward my face, but I’d been ready for it since his body had telegraphed his intentions long before it followed them through. I easily ducked the weak punch.

I countered with the same move he’d tried, but my fist collided with flesh.

He stumbled a few steps back.

“He didn’t say you would be quite the obstacle you’re proving to be,” Detraux said, this time trying to sweep my legs.

I had no idea what Detraux was talking about but I wasn’t about to waste brain power trying to figure it out even though this fight really wasn’t a true fight, at least not for me. However, I also knew that even though Detraux was no match for me, one slipup could prove to be my downfall. Even in an easy fight the underdog could get the upper hand if the opponent became sloppy.

But the man really was slow and ridiculously weak. It almost felt wrong fighting such an unequal opponent, until I remembered who he was. He had hit on Aria, forcing attention on her although she was clearly uncomfortable with it. And so much worse than that, he led men who enslaved women, who bought and sold them, treating them more poorly than most commercial goods. I thought of the women in that dungeon room. The fear on their faces.

And my arm collided with his face once again.

“Ahh!” Detraux cried out. He collapsed backwards, his head hitting the wall behind him.
