“Get him out of here,” Colt said when it was obvious I was done with the conversation. I could have begged Detraux for what he knew but I wasn’t that desperate. I would figure out Detraux’s connection to my ex on my own. Did that mean my ex was mixed up with the Beast Boys? It wouldn’t surprise me.

Even though we’d weeded out a big portion of the Beast Boys business today, I had a feeling Detraux wasn’t the top guy. I knew the police would be interrogating him to figure out how far things went, but I doubted Detraux would give us much, if anything. But he’d given me enough. He may have wanted to scare me with that date and he had . . . for a few seconds. But now I realized he’d given me a gift—another access point to this criminal ring I’d vowed to take down.

“Give my ex my regards, will you?” I asked Detraux as he was led away.

He paused, as if unable to believe my audacity. I wasn’t surprised. If my ex had told him the kind of woman I had been, he wouldn’t think I was strong enough to say that. But I wasn’t the woman my ex had left behind.

“Actually, maybe I’ll do it myself,” I said.

This time Detraux’s head spun to look back at me.

That’s right, Scum. I’m not afraid of him. Take that message back to the man who’d tried to kill me.

He’d heard she’d been making some improvements over the years. But so had he. He hadn’t let these cell walls keep him from continuing his life, bettering his future. His creation would be waiting for him when he was finally free.

And so would she. Even if she didn’t know it yet. October 30thwould bring Shai back into his life. Back into his power.
