I didn’t even get a chance to finish my thought before I slammed into something hard.

Correction—someonehard.

I looked up gazing into the icy blue eyes of possibly the most handsome face I’d ever seen. He wasn’t just handsome though; there was something dangerous about him, something almost terrifying. His model-gorgeous features were formed into a hard expression that made it clear he wasnothappy to have found me where I shouldn’t have been.

“You lost, love?”

Chapter 8

Connor

If she was scared, she sure as hell didn’t show it.

I liked that right away about her.

“Love?” she asked, stepping back and assuming a defensive posture, her face knitting in anger. “Who the hell are you callinglove?”

However stunning the woman had been across the club, being up close and personal to her was something else entirely. The tight, black dress clung to her body, showing off her luscious, perfect curves. Her legs were the right balance of slender and toned, her face heart-shaped and so striking that it was enough to give someone like me—a man who worked around some of the most beautiful women this city had to offer, pause.

In that moment, however, it wasn’t merely her looks that had taken hold of me. It was her attitude, her fearlessness, the way she stood strong and firm in the face of a man as dangerous as me.

All the same, I had a job to do.

“Too familiar for you?” I asked. “Fine. What’s your name?”

A small, knowing smile formed on her lips. “That’s information you don’t need to know.”

I chuckled at her audacity. This woman, whoever she was, impressed me more and more by the second.

Too bad for her, I already knew more than she realized. For example, I knew she had been snooping around and asking questions about Kiki.

I kept that bit of information to myself. I didn’t want her to know quite yet that I’d been tailing her since she’d come into the back, that I’d overheard her in the changing room asking about one of our former employees.

No, I wanted to see how far she’d take things, how deep she was willing to dig in.

“Tell me, what’re you doing back here? Last I checked, the back of this establishment has been clearly marked as Pussycats staff only.”

“I got lost. I’m here with my husband…”

I glanced down at her hand, locking my eyes on the bare bit of skin where a ring should’ve been.

“You’re married? Doesn’t look like it to me.”

“Huh?” she realized where I was looking, quickly tucking her hand under her arm, as if that might be enough to distract me. “We decided to leave our rings home tonight. You know, thought it’d be fun to go out on the town swinger-style.”

I had to admit she was quick on her feet, able to weave a tale right there on the spot. More and more she was impressing me.

“So, that’s what you’re here for? To swing? I’ll have you know that Pussycats isn’t that sort of establishment. If you and your husband came here to get your rocks off, you’re both going to be leaving sorely disappointed.” I couldn’t resist having a little fun with her.

She forced a dumb smile on her face, as if she’d been busted and was embarrassed.

“Well, notthatkind of swinging. Just having fun looking at pretty girls, you know?”

“I suppose. Regardless, do you want to tell me what you’re doing back here?”

“I was looking for the bathroom. Anyone ever tell you that this place has got a crappy layout? I’ve been wandering around for twenty minutes and I still can’t find it.”

“Bathrooms are down the hall from the bar. Funny, most guests seem to be able to find them just fine.”
