“Now, the lunch,” he said, flashing me a disarming smile. “I hope you’re not planning on making me beg.”

This guy was dangerous. Sure, he was charming and handsome, but I had no doubt that he was the sort of man who’d be able to take a life without too much trouble. All the same, he was my best shot at getting to Kat.

“Lunch,” I said. “Let’s do it.”

“Excellent. Where should I pick you up?”

I came to my senses in that moment, realizing what a bad idea it would be to tell this guy my freaking address.

“You really think I’m going to let you know where I live? No, we will meet in a public place.”

He nodded, not bothered at all by my request. “Perfectly sensible suggestion from a perfectly sensible woman.”

“Here,” I said, nodding to the side. “We’ll meet here.”

He smirked. “I’m sure you don’t mean this hallway.”

“Cute. No, I mean I’ll meet you in front of the club. Let’s say noon?”

“Sounds grand to me. I’m looking forward to it.”

“Now, if you’ll kindly step out of my way…”

He nodded slowly, moving aside and letting me pass. Too eager in my step forward, I grazed past his broad, solid chest, my breasts rubbing against him. The sensation was enough to give me pause, to make me stop where I stood.

I looked up into his eyes, those icy blues staring down at me, making me feel as if a spell had been cast. My mouth parted, my pussy clenched, and through the swirl of thoughts in my mind I knew that if he were to wrap his big arm around my waist and pull me against him, to take me right then and there, I’d have a very hard time resisting.

He didn’t do that, however. Instead, he spoke.

“Perfectly sensible women don’t kiss strangers.”

With that, he leaned to the side and opened the door, the smirk still on his face.

“I’ll see you tomorrow, Claire.”

Never in a million years would I think I’d be so relieved to see a freaking strip club. Three new dancers were on the stage, and I recognized one of them as the blonde from the dressing room. The lustful smile on her face faded for a quick moment as she saw me.

I scanned the club and found Trevor at the booth where we’d been seated. A can of Bud was open in front of him, and he regarded me with a wide-eyed expression of both annoyance and relief. He rose, snatching his beer off the table and hurrying over to me.

“What the hell was going on back there?” he asked, raising his voice. “What were you doing?”

Trevor’s voice was way too loud, his words carrying over the music and attracting the attention of some of the nearby security guards.

“Let’s go. I’ll tell you in the car.”

He let out a sigh of frustration, taking one last, long swig of his beer as I hurried out of the club and back out into the evening air. Relief washed over me as soon as we were outside, and I wasted no time getting to the car and hopping into the driver’s seat.

“OK,” he said. “Fill me in on what happened.”

I tried to gather my thoughts, but all I could focus on washim. Tommy had been a total asshole, not to mention vaguely threatening. Still, I couldn’t get him out of my mind.

“I went into the back and spoke with one of the managers. At least, I think he was one of the managers.”

“You went into the back?” he asked, total disbelief in his voice. “Are you kidding? Claire, you said you were going to ask around—you didn’t say anything about sneaking into a part of the club where you weren’t supposed to be. That’s theMobyou’re messing with, you know?”

“I know.”

He sighed. “Well, it’s not like I can talk you out of what you already did. What did the guy say? Does he know anything about Kat?”
