“Now, I’m not in the business of keeping people against their will,” I said. “I think it’s well past time for you to leave.” I leaned forward and pressed the button for the intercom. “Sean, please pull over near where our guest can find a cab.”

She crossed her arms and shot me a hard look, not saying a word as Sean gently pulled the car over to the side of the road.

“Until next time, love.”

One more hard glare and she opened the door, stepping out and slamming it shut behind her.

I couldn’t help but smile at her fiery exit even as I contemplated the trouble she could cause me. I watched Claire stride down the street, and with each step she took I was more and more certain that she was about the sexiest damn woman I’d ever laid eyes on.

I waited until she was safely in a cab and on her way before giving the order to Sean to get us going.

Chapter 14

Claire

Iwas so goddamn mad at myself that I couldn’t think straight.

I’d fucked him. What the hell was I thinking?

As the cab drove through the streets of downtown, my eyes on the city as we passed, I realized the issue.

You hadn’t been thinking, Claire. That’s the whole issue. You met with Connor on a mission, but got all kinds of wrapped up in his eyes and his arms and his hands and his…

My pussy tingled as I found myself going over the laundry list of all Connor’s sexiest traits. I found my mind drifting back to the sex we’d had only a short time ago, how damned gorgeous his body had looked over top of me, his muscles machinelike as they worked with each full, deep thrust between my thighs.

My phone buzzed in my purse and I quickly took it out. As unlikely as it was, part of me hoped that it might be a text from Kat letting me know that she was safe and sound. Maybe she’d even include a selfie of her winking with her tongue stuck out.

No such luck, of course. The text was from Jo at the office, a question about some brief of mine that she’d been going over. I typed back a quick response before tucking my phone away and turning my attention back to the city.

Thankfully, we weren’t too far from my place. Ten or so minutes after I’d gotten into the cab, I stepped out of it and into my condo. I was eager to arrive home and get out of this silly dress and hop into the shower to wash the lingering traces of Connor off my body.

That’s just what I did. The moment the door shut I began stripping off my clothes, peeling down the dress before shucking off my bra and panties. Once in the bathroom, I turned on the shower and made the water nice and hot until it was perfect.

I stepped into the stream of water and let out a longahhhof total delight. As the water did its magic, I found myself going over the events of the last few hours, again wondering what the hell I’d been thinking.

If Connor had been some random guy, that’d be one thing. Hewasn’tsome random guy; however, he was a criminal—one of the most dangerous, powerful men in the city of Boston. And where the hell did a woman like me, someone whose very job was to uphold the law, get off on hooking up with a man whose job was to break it?

I was mad at myself, way too mad to think the issue over with a clear head. I poured a little bodywash into my hand, getting it good and sudsy before rubbing it over my body. As I did, I found myself thinking of him once more, my own touch reminding me of how damn good it’d felt for those big, strong hands to travel all over my body, his fingers moving from my breasts to my belly to down below my waist…

“No.”

I spoke the word out loud to myself right in the middle of the shower, my voice echoing off the tile. I pulled my hands off my body before they went too far, then quickly rinsed myself off and got out.

I was angry that I’d given into him, angry that I wasstillattracted to the asshole even though I knew who he was.

Here’s the rule—Connor isoff-limits. Don’t see him or talk to him or anythingunlesshe has information about Kat. Unless he’s going to help you find her, you don’t need him in your life at all.

I nodded and wrapped the towel around my body, pleased with my decision. From there, I marched into my bedroom and fell back onto my bed, a soft rain beginning to fall as I did my best to let my mind unspool.

My purse was nearby, so I reached into it and took my phone out, once more hoping for a bit of good news. There was nothing. For lack of any other options, I dialed Kat’s number, as if she might answer and let me know that she’d simply misplaced her phone and that’s why she’d been out of touch, maybe even following it up by asking if I wanted to go out for drinks later or something.

Didn’t happen. The call went right to her voicemail. I didn’t bother leaving a message.

The phone still in my hand, I pulled up the number of Diamond, her roommate. She and I hadn’t exactly had the best conversation the last time we’d talked, but I called her anyway, figuring it was worth a shot. Worst case, she didn’t answer.

She did, however.

“Hello?” her voice was small, as if she were hiding and didn’t want to be overheard.
