“Can you blame me? One minute I’m cramming for my MCATs and the next I’m looking down the barrel of a three-year prison sentence!”

“I know it’s scary, but I’m here to reassure you. They’re counting on you being afraid and jumping through whatever hoops they want to get their petty little revenge. And the worst part is that they have to know these charges won’t stick; no prosecutor in the city would take a case like this to court.”

“Really?”

“Really. They want you crying on your knees for forgiveness, probably so their little loser of a son can watch you squirm and make his battered little ego feel better.”

She smiled at my words.

“We’re not going to let that happen, though. You take me on, and first thing I do is get their lawyer on the line to tell them the charges are BS. Once that’s done, I tell themI’mgoing to be the one making a case. After all, he was the one who touched you. And you’ve got witnesses, right?”

Lily nodded. “Yeah. My friends. They all saw it.”

“Perfect.”

“But wait, what about the cost?”

“Cases like these are why I got into law, Lily. Plus, this one should be pretty open and shut. I’ll work with you on the total costs, and if you have any trouble, we can set up a payment plan—a nice and long one where you’re only paying a few bucks a month.”

She beamed, hope taking hold of her features for the first time since she’d come into my office.

“You can’t be serious.”

“I’m totally serious. I—”

I didn’t get a chance to finish. A knock sounded at the office door, interrupting me and breaking my concentration.

“Sorry,” I said. “I told my assistant not to bother me during office hours. Let me just…”

I rose from my seat and went to the door. I opened it and sure enough, Kelsey, my assistant, was on the other side. I was about to give her a mild scolding for interrupting me but the serious expression of concern on her face stopped me short.

“I know you’re in the middle of a meeting,” she said, her tone apologetic. “But you told me that if your friend Kat tried to call, to interrupt you no matter what was going on.”

At first, I was sure I’d heard her wrong.

“Kat?”

She nodded. “Yes, your friend Kat. She’s on the line right now.”

My heart skipped a beat, emotions running through me. I wanted to burst into a run, to get to the phone as quickly as possible, to not waste another second without talking to Kat. I still had a client; however, who was counting on my help. I took a deep, slow breath and spoke.

“Sorry, Lily,” I said, turning back toward her. “An emergency just came up. But let me tell you what we’re going to do. My assistant Kelsey’s going to take all of your information for me to look over, and then she’s going to set up another appointment for later this week. Then, you and I can talk about our plan of attack for your case. Both meetings will be free of charge for the inconvenience, of course.”

Lily stood up, a smile on her face. I could sense that she was able to tell that I was just barely keeping it together, that something serious was going on. “That sounds great. And thanks again, Ms. Murphy.”

“Call me Claire.”

We shook before saying our goodbyes.

“Line three,” Kelsey said quietly as she shut the door.

Seconds later, I was alone. My heart was beating like a drum as I turned my attention to the phone. I felt like I was buzzing. Finally, I took another deep breath and picked up the line.

“Kat?”

“Claire.”

It was her.
