Kat had stepped out of the shower with wet hair and dressed in one of my white, fluffy robes, her eyes going wide as she saw the food I’d had delivered. She’d practically pounced on the meal, shoveling the food into her mouth and washing it down with big swigs of water.

As I watched her eat, I

let my eyes linger on her swollen lip and bruised cheek.

“Kat,” I said. “What happened?”

Before answering, she shoveled in another big mouthful of noodles. Those down, she took another gulp of water and sat back.

“That’s more food than I’ve eaten over the last week.”

I placed my hand on her leg. “I know it’s going to take time, but are you at least feeling a little better now?”

She nodded, and I could tell by the new light in her eyes that the shower and food had done wonders.

“Better. But God, I was going insane in there. They had me peeing in abucket, can you believe that?”

“Who isthey?” I asked. “You getting better is my top priority, don’t get me wrong. But right after that is finding who did this and bringing them to justice.”

Kat took another long swig of water.

“It was those pricks that own Pussycats.”

“Why did they take you?”

“Because of what I told you about what that stupid Mickey asshole said.”

I’d had a feeling it had something to do with that, but now I knew for sure. I was filing away every piece of information she was giving me for later use when I brought those assholes down.

“How did you get out?”

“They eventually moved me over to this warehouse close to where you picked me up. And when they put me in there, I was sure that it was the place they were going to kill me and dispose of me, you know? But when the guys left, I noticed that they’d left the door open. Total idiots, didn’t even shut the door all the way. I waited until they were gone, then got the hell out of there and called you. And now I’m here.”

More tears welled in her eyes.

“I’m scared, Claire. They’re going to try to find me and kill me. I know it.”

I wrapped my arm around her and held Kat close.

“I won’t let that happen,” I promised my best friend.

I would do anything in my power to make sure I kept that promise.

Chapter 18

Connor

“What the bloody hell?”

Kellan stormed into the room, looking around as if he might find the girl hidden underneath the sleeping bag or the bathroom bucket.

“Where the fuck did she go?”

I placed my hand on the doorknob and swung the door back and forth.

“I’d wager she went out this way, little brother.”

Kellan scoffed, rolling his eyes. “Now’s not the time for smart-arse shite, Con. The girl isgone.”
