That’s not at all what I wanted, however. Even though I knew I shouldn’t, Connor had been all I’d been able to think about over the last few weeks. I’d been totally conflicted about the issue. Part of me had hoped he’d never think of me again, the other wanted desperately for him to call me.

Screw it. I pulled up his number and called it. After the fourth ring, disappointment began to take hold at the idea of him not picking up.

“Claire.” His voice was deep and low and sensual, even over the phone. “And here I was worrying that you might be ignoring me.”

I allowed myself a nervous laugh. “Strange, you don’t seem like the worrying type.”

“Just because I am who I am doesn’t mean ghosting doesn’t hurt my feelings.” He spoke in that wry, ironic tone that he seemed to prefer, the one that made it hard to tell if he was joking around. The man was all kinds of dry and sardonic, which I kinda sorta dug.Still, I had to remember who this man was.

“What can I do for you Connor?”

“I want to see you again,” he said. “And I want to see you today.”

My vision blurred for a moment as I tried to wrap my head around what he’d just told me.

“I’m sorry, what?”

“You heard me. I want to see you today.”

I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself.

“I don’t know if that’s possible, Connor.”

“Why not?”

A reason, a real one, popped into my head.

“Because I have a meeting with one of the partners and a new client today.”

“When’s the meeting?”

There was something about his insistence, something about the way he blew past all of my objections, that actually made me more open to seeing him. Connor, for all his faults, was certainly a man who knew what he wanted and went for it, no matter what.

I checked my watch. “It’s at eleven. But it’s probably going to take a little time and—”

“Two o’clock. There’s a coffee shop just across the street from your office.”

I stepped over to the glass walls and looked down. Wicked Roasters was down on street level. Something hit me as I gazed down at it.

“Wait, how do you know where I work?”

“I’m a resourceful man. Now, can I expect you at two?”

I gave the matter a moment of thought, trying to figure out what I really wanted.

Hell, Iknewwhat I wanted—to see him again. The real question was whether or not it was a good idea.

Screw it. If nothing else, I could try and get some information on Kat’s abduction.

“Sure, I’ll be there.”

“Excellent. I’ll see you then.”

The line clicked dead, and I stomped my foot a little at how powerless I’d felt. Ihatedfeeling powerless.

A knock sounded on the conference room door, startling me back into the moment.

“Come in!”
