The music was coming from a laptop sitting in the corner. It wasn’t her music, however. Hers or the band’s. There was a duo singing, male and female. I didn’t know the voices…wait, did I?

Leaning against the doorframe, I drank in the sight of her rocking those hips and that ass. The muscles in her legs moved with every step. She seemed… skinnier somehow. She’d always been lean and fierce, but this was different. I couldn’t put my finger on it.

“Fuck!” The shout yanked my attention up from her ass to her face, and I barely managed to get my hand up in time to catch the book she’d thrown at me.

“Damn, Ace.” I grinned at the text. It was a heavy one. “Nice aim.”

“What the fuck are you doing in here?” Her voice crackled like crunched paper. It was definitely not the usual dulcet tones I associated with her.

“Well,” I said slowly, as she fisted her hand over her chest. Maybe startling her had been a dick thing to do, but I couldn’t resist this opening. “I came to see who was sleeping in my bed.”

Her brows tightened as she twisted to hit the spacebar on her laptop and the music cut off abruptly. Then she stared at me. “This is my room now. And my bed. Trust me, I had a new mattress brought in, along with a brand-new bed. Even happier about it now.”

“Ouch.” The mock sigh didn’t win me any points, so I just carried the flung textbook on governments around the world and set it on the bed. It had to be a couple of thousand pages. “Don’t want to sleep in my bed?”

“No,” she said firmly, folding her arms and glaring at me. “Get out of my room, Lachlan. Now.”

There was something hot about the way she said my name. Even if I didn’t like how bad her throat sounded. “You see a doctor about that yet?”

“None of your business,” she said, dropping her folded arms to stalk toward me. “Get. Out.”

“Hey,” I said, enjoying the contact when her hands slapped against my chest. This close, I got a better look at her. I caught her biceps before she could retreat. “I came to check on you.”

Her eyebrows climbed.

“Wounds me that you don’t think I care, Ace. Didn’t I come through for you in L.A.?”

The shock on her face was probably an insult. But if she wanted to make me work for it, well, then I could deal with that.

“I’ve been worried since the fire, but apparently my brothers are keeping secrets. Didn’t know you’d moved in with Jonas, and Ramsey definitely didn’t say a word.” A fact I’d take up with both of them later. “If I’d known, I’d have been here to see you sooner. How are you?” I rubbed her arms. “Really. And have you seen a doctor about your throat?”

What did one do to make that better?

The stroke of her tongue over her lower lip created a stuttering halt to my thoughts. “Goddamn, Ace,” I whispered as I dragged her a little closer. “I’ve missed you.”

A part of me braced for her knee. Worth it, but I’d missed these sweet lips. I’d missed the firebrand in her eyes. I’d missed the bite of her teeth as her mouth opened to me. The connection sizzled to life, and I drank in the taste of her as she went from flattening her hands on my chest to fisting my shirt.

The drag pulled me to her, and I slid a hand up into her hair. It was like silk on my fingers. Her gasp was the perfect accompaniment to the way she met the thrust of my tongue with her own. All the blood in my body went south, but I kept my attention on the kittenish flicks of her tongue as I explored her sweet taste.

Fuck, I’d missed this. Missed her. When she scraped her teeth over my tongue, I welcomed the pain. Even more when she bit my lower lip. All claws and teeth, my girl.

The next bite drew blood and I lifted my head to find her eyes hot as she stared up at me with her face flushed. I waited for the wicked sting of her verbal lashes, but it didn’t come.

“Did you get my presents, Ace?” I had to know. I stroked my thumb over the fullness of her damp lower lip and she dipped her lashes.

“Presents?”

“The coffee… the running shoes? The clothes?” I dipped my gaze to her legs. Was she wearing a pair of those panties right now? Oh, the idea tantalized me.

“Hmm,” she hummed with a shrug, releasing my shirt. “Were those from you?”

I grinned slowly. She wouldn’t even entertain this game if she hadn’t got them. “Tease.” I pressed another fierce kiss to her lips. “Get that throat looked at, Ace. I can find you a good doc if you need it.” The idea of picking her up and tossing her on the bed was right there.

I could slip my hands down and pull away the t-shirt to get a good look. Except she hadn’t thrown me out yet, so no need to tempt fate.

“I’ll see you in the morning,” I promised against her lips, then forced myself to let her go and retreat. It was a stone bitch when every part of my body wanted to be right there with her, but my brain was right.

She wasn’t ready to be caught.
