Mom didn’t try. “Yes, you,” she said, moving a few steps forward. “You’re protecting your brother—again.”

“It’s not like that…”

“No?” She raised her eyebrows. “This ismuchworse. What you let him do to me was one thing…how could you let him do it to Emersyn?”

“I didn’tlethim do anything. He controls—”

“Yes, yes, I’ve heard your excuses about how he controls the money. Nonetheless, you had been in a position to oust him. Instead, you let him make all the decisions—”

“I don’t have a choice, Moira. If I fought him, he would have taken youagain. I don’t have the shares in the company or support on the board.” The last came out a snivel. “He has everything…”

“Because of your gambling,” I said. It was a guess, yet somehow I suspected it was the right one. He closed his eyes.

“Baby—”

Liam’s fist landed against his kidney and Sharpe’s whole body contorted as he began to cough up blood.

“You keep your endearments to yourself,” Liam informed him. “Do it again, and I’ll start ripping out your teeth—then your tongue.”

Sharpe coughed as he struggled to pull in a breath. Mom shot a glance at Liam then at me. I lifted my shoulders. I wasn’t going to complain about their tactics.

“We’ve given him plenty of opportunities,” I told her, ignoring the man I’d called Dad and Daddy for most of my life. “He would rather protect Fuckbucket, than us.”

Mom met my gaze, her expression tense, then she looked at him again. This time she took another two steps forward and flung the contents of her coffee cup at his abdomen and pants. The coffee had still been steaming.

He let out a shriek as the hot coffee made contact.

“Do I have your attention, Reginald?” she demanded. “Where is he? Where would he go to hide? For once in our miserable marriage, put us first and not him.” A sob caught in her throat. “Please. Put Em first…you promised me a family, and then you sacrificed us to him.”

He stared at her, pain on his face and agony in his eyes. This really hurt him.

On some primitive level, I was fine with it. When Freddie ghosted up next to me and pressed his knife into my hand, I pulled my gaze off of them and found a smile just for him.

“When you’re ready,” he said.

When I was ready… Reginald Sharpe was going to die, and Fuckbucket was next.

Calm invaded me, sliding through my veins like a soothing salve for my soul. When I leaned into Freddie, he wrapped an arm around my shoulders, and we stared at Reginald Sharpe as Mom glared at him.

She was shaking.

But then, so was I.

Sharpe still broke first.

Thank fuck.

“He’s—he’s got a place he prefers…Adirondacks…”

CHAPTER40

EMERSYN

Adirondacks? No. It wasn’t until after we’d finished questioning him—well, after Mom finished with him—that I let myself process the revelations he’d made.

Standing in the warehouse, Mom stared sightlessly at one of the trucks. Bewildered and a little lost, she made my heart hurt. The others filed out, but I heard a pained yelp before the door closed fully.

So did Mom if her flinch was anything to go by. “What’s going to happen to him?” she asked, not looking at me or anyone else.
