Mickey was on the phone with Alphabet. His guys were sticking close, but with everyone here they didn’t need to be so vigilant at the warehouse. I remembered three possible ports where the Hans Sachs might be moored. None of them were anywhere near Braxton Harbor.

“We’re going to have to rethink how we’re doing this,” Kellan said.

“We need a plan, period,” Jasper said as he polished the end of the cue. “We’re already stretched thin. We need to send Moira somewhere else.”

That suggestion was both a relief and a concern. I wanted her safe, but I needed the distance. “What options do we have for that? She said I have money in my accounts…I can definitely move some around.”

“I have it,” Liam told me. “I will arrange a security detail for her as I have for my mom. Then we’ll set her up somewhere safe. Maybe find her a real doctor instead of some fucking quack to work with her.”

“Thank you.” I honestly had no other profound words for the gratitude surging through me. Liam had so much on his plate already. He winked as he put the phone back to his ear and paced away.

“Okay, so we ditch Mama Sharpe, and we gut Daddy Sharpe,” Freddie said.

“Freddie,” Mickey said, but I reached over to catch Freddie’s hand and squeezed it.

“It’s okay, he’s right…and I don’t have a problem with it.” No matter how much I wanted to make things work with Mom, I didn’t and couldn’t with Sharpe himself. I’d rather mourn who he could have been than worry about him now.

“Good,” Kellan said as he leaned back in the chair. “What bothers me is we will have to split up to do this. We’re stronger as a unit, but we’re also a lot of people—not all of us need to be on this hunt.”

“Are we rushing it, though?” Vaughn asked. “We’re thinking he might be on a boat, but we don’t have anything concrete that says he is.”

Which was a problem. “We don’t have any evidence he isn’t. We’ve not found him at any of the properties the family owns or corporate holdings. Wherever he is, he’s staying out of sight. Not even The king has come through on that challenge.”

“Granted, we only gave it to him a few days ago,” Liam said, folding his arms. “However, this is a man who likes to know things. He prides himself on knowing the answers to any questions before they’re asked.”

“He also said an attack on you is an attack on him.” That was a twisted fact considering his own attacks on our family. I still couldn’t wrap my mind around the idea that he was my biological father.

I didn’t think I even wanted to try and process it.

“That’s why I believe we’ll have to play this game out to the bitter end.” Kellan shook his head and then looked at me. “How adamant are you about not going into hiding?”

Everything in me resisted that idea. Except… “Do you need me to? To hide? To be out of sight?”

His eyes softened. “Sparrow, I need you to be safe. If we split our resources, I want you in a secure location. I’d say here, but they know where here is, and Doc’s friends…”

Mickey’s friends could shelter me on the move. That discussion had already come up more than once.

“So I hide while you guys take all the risks?” Couldn’t say I was a fan.

“Measured risks,” Jasper told me. “We can save the crazy shit for when you’re back with us.”

The look Kellan gave him was so damn unfriendly, I burst out laughing. Freddie snorted, but no one disagreed.

I loathed this plan.

“I’ll make sure you get to where you’re going,” Milo said. “One of us should be with her.”

“If you want,” Kellan said. “I’m not going to argue.”

Milo just shook his head, but I caught Liam and Jasper’s nods of approval. They’d set Milo up. They wantedhimout of the line of fire too.

“It’s okay, big brother,” I told him. “I’ll watch your back.”

He chuckled, but a hint of a smile touched Rome’s lips and Mickey seemed to relax. Right, they wanted me and Milo both safe. I could do that. I could gohideif it meant protecting Milo. I hated leaving them, but if I stayed, so would Milo. The threat against him was very real.

“Okay,” I said. “Tell me the plan. What can I do—or better—what do you need me to do?”

Because I wanted this over and done with. I wanted my freedom and theirs.
