‘Also accounted for. Just like electric cars use regenerative braking to recharge their batteries while slowing down, so does this shuttle. The energy levels are far too large for a conventional battery, so instead, the shuttle pumps the excess energy into a safe gamma radiation-free nuclear battery.’

‘Fascinating,’ she said.

‘Fokk, you’re good, Kage,’ he rumbled.

Confused, she screwed up her face. ‘What did you say?’

He laughed at her earnest expression. ‘I said, I’m good at what I do.’

‘Meaning you’re the bombass designer of this particular electromagnetic engine,’ she deduced.

‘Right, on the second try.’

Harlow groaned. ‘You’re too much for me, Kage Sable.’

‘I do my best.’

‘Now you’re bragging.’

‘Totally,’ he admitted with a twinkle in his eye. ‘How else will I impress you, Harlow?’

She rolled her eyes at him. Little did he know he didn’t need to impress her at all.

‘Sleep well?’ he asked a little more softly this time.

She turned to face him with a sweet smile. ‘Can’t complain. My bed is a double King, and it feels like I’m floating in a sea of soft pillowy clouds. Truly a turning point in my meagre double bed experience to date.’

His broad chest rumbled with amusement. ‘You’re something else, Harlow.’

‘I aim to please,’ she shot back. ‘How was your night?’

‘Quiet. Worked out. Cooked. Slept. Nothing out of the ordinary.’

‘No partying?’ she teased.

‘Not a party hat to be seen.’

‘So what does someone like you do for fun on Eden II?’ she ventured.

His lips twitched as he contemplated her question. ‘In my younger days, there were mad choices - casinos, bars, all-night dance clubs, kapodens, the lot. Now, all I do is work, cook, eat, and sleep between working out and the occasional dinner at the latest restaurant du jour. Or hanging with my brothers, crashing their cribs.’

‘Sounds like a good life.’

‘Given where I’ve come from, it’s the best life. I never take a moment of it for granted.’

Harlow tilted her head to the side, considering his words. ‘I know exactly what you mean.’

Their eyes got caught again in a shared clash of emotions.

Just then, Harlow felt the shuttle decelerate. ‘Landing? Already?’

‘Told you it was a short flight.’

The shuttle coasted to a stop, and Harlow quickly glanced outside curiously. But, unfortunately, there wasn’t much scenery that availed itself, so she gave up. The seat belt light chimed, and she promptly unbuckled, rising to her feet to gather her things.

‘After you,’ Kage told her, pausing so she could move past him.

She strolled in front of him down the air bridge and off the shuttle.
