‘Which means you professionally brawled in your past?’

‘Naam, I did,’ he said. ’Twas a long time ago though, kara.’

‘Is it dangerous?’

‘It’s high-paced from start to finish - and it’s mad competitive, so we go hard.’

‘It’s exciting, though, to watch. You must come,’ Selene urged. ‘It’s a trip. My heart was in my throat the first time I went. Super exciting!’

‘I may just do that,’ Harlow said quietly, intrigued.

‘It’s a good time,’ Kainan added. ‘A great show of sportsmanship and giving back. Plus, you’ll get to see one of the greats embarrass himself.’

Kage lunged towards hiskhosiand shadow-boxed him for a moment. The Riders cheered as the two men grappled for a moment before pulling apart with a laugh.

Kage turned to Harlow, his hair tousled and falling over his silver eyes, and she felt her heart kick.

‘Need to escape thesekinais. The sooner we eat, the quicker we’ll leave. You hungry, kara?’ He asked, his voice low.

She nodded wordlessly.

He rose to prowl towards the dinner table. He came back with a platter covered in delectable goodness. From tender lobster bread stuffed with chilli prawns and served rolled in edible leaves; to steak tartare on butter thin toast and a drizzled jus, mini lamb hot-dogs and a salad of chanterelle mushrooms and baby turnips.

She moaned as she tasted the chilli prawn bread.

He then fed her the steak tartare, popping it into her mouth, his eyes darkening with pleasure as she groaned with ecstasy.

‘You’re fattening me up for the kill,’ she protested.

‘The kill, yes, Fattening up, no. Just making sure you’re well fed for the night ahead.’

‘I have to meet your chef, please. They need to understand how much their cooking is blowing my mind.’

The conversation around them fell.

‘She doesn’t know, does she?’ Riv drawled, breaking into the awkward silence.

‘Know what?’ Harlow probed, sitting up and looking at the assembled Riders and Selene.

No one responded, so she tried again. ‘Know what, people? What are you hiding from me?’

‘Not us,’ Riv replied, a tiny glimmer of amusement shining in his pale eyes. ‘’Tis your man who’s been doing the hiding, it seems.’

Harlow whipped her head around and nailed Kage with a side-eye. ‘Please explain.’

He looked away coyly.

She looked at him, his friends, the food and back to him again.

‘Damn IT!’ she choked in realisation. ‘You’re the chef?’

Kage swung his head back towards her with a subtle smile.

‘What the actual? All this time, you’ve been the one cheffing for me?’

‘Exactly how long has this been going on?’ Xion exclaimed in mock horror.

‘All week, brother, all week,’ Kainan crowed. ‘He hasn’t left the kitchen! He’s been at it all night long, every night, night after night.’
