‘Want me to stop,kara?’

‘Not sure I can do this,’ she said quietly, her face flushed with arousal.

He took a deep breath and pushed away in an extraordinary show of self-control. ‘I know, and it’ssawa.’

‘How are you so patient with me?’

‘Because I know the payoff will be worth it. Whether you know it or not, you want to be loved the right way. But you don’t trust in love for reasons I won’t push you to share ’til you’re ready. All I know is that you can’t keep holding onto what hurt you in the past. So you’ve got to be open to trusting in us. Are you willing to at least try?’

‘I can’t,’ she whispered.

‘You can’t, or you won’t?’

‘I’m not ready for whatever it this is.’

‘I respect that, Harlow. I’m not pushing you.’

‘Besides, you don’t really know me, so -’

‘True. I don’t know everything about you. But, what I do know, I adore. And I’d like to get the chance to love on you,’ he countered. ‘When you’re ready.’

She started to reply, but he lifted his hand. ‘Not now, kara. I don’t need an answer for when that is this very minute. Think about it. We’ll discuss it sometime soon.’

She felt a rush of relief.

‘I’ve got the best of intents,’ he continued. ‘I want you and all there is of you - for the long haul, kara.’

She looked up into his eyes. ‘It may take a long time for me to get where you are, Kage.’

He shrugged with a small smile and resolve written all over his face. ‘No matter. I intend to be right here when you do.’

Torn down from the skies

Harlow

She wandered down a corridor at Skylab, eyes fixed on her comm tab. So focused was she on her screen that she walked off her side of the hall and bumped into someone coming the other way.

She put out a hand instinctively and apologised under her breath.

She glanced up at the sound of a chuckle, her eyes meeting a pair of light blue ones.

‘You’re one hard woman to track down.’

She plastered a smile on her face. ‘Ruben, how are you?’

‘I’m doing fantastic!’

He bowed and gestured for her to walk past him. When she did, he matched her stride. ‘How are you and that top-secret program you’re working on?’ he probed as they walked towards Skylab’s central hub.

‘Going fine.’

‘Listen, been messaging you for days now. No replies.’

Harlow shrugged. ‘I’ve been swamped.’

The Rhesian man looked put out, but still, he pushed on. ‘Wondered whether you’d be keen for a kahawa break now. Want to run something past you.’
