His wildfire eyes met hers, and she almost swayed. She reached for the Chancellor’s arm to steady herself.

Still, Kainan held her gaze, and she returned it. She was drawn in by his energy, by the crazy polarity between them. Her eyes felt fixed on him, pulled to him.

Selene couldn’t quite read his expression but knew if he turned away from her, it might break her heart for an eternity.

Murmuring her apologies to the Chancellor, she pulled away and walked towards Kainan, her heart beating a wild rhythm in her chest.

He watched her approach, his eyes low and hooded, and she felt their heat burn the air between them. Then, a few lurching heartbeats later, she reached his side.

‘Kainan,’ she said softly. It was all she could manage.

‘Excellency,’ he uttered huskily, turning to face her fully while raking his eyes over her face and dress. ‘You look beautiful. You are the sun and stars in one, lighting up the room tonight.’

‘Thank you. You, too, are magnificent,’ she said, then gave him a teasing look. ‘When you choose to be.’

His lips quirked. ‘Kage, Zane and Riv pushed me. I had no choice but to follow the evening’s dress code, Excellency.’

‘Please,’ she said, reaching out to touch his arm. ‘Let’s not be so formal tonight.’

He tracked her hand with his eyes, and she recognised the wariness lurking there.

He conceded with a slight nod. ‘Selene, then.’

She felt a small stab of disappointment, for she’d hoped for another name. One he’d often lapsed into calling her when the connection between them blazed. She pulled back her hand, tucking it under her other wrist at her waist, resisting the desire to run her hand along his jaw, sorely missing their previous, private intimacy.

She gathered herself and gave him a somewhat strained smile. ‘Thank you for coming and especially for lending your guards to us tonight to bolster our security.’

‘De nada. It’s the least I could do. Given my recent failure,’ he ground out, tipping back the contents of the glass in his hand down his throat.

Selene shook her head at him. ‘I thought we cleared this up, Kainan. You were not at fault.’

He gave a soft huff. ‘The security council let me know how they felt, Selene, but I still have no idea howyoufeel about it.’

Selene studied the man for a long moment. ‘You think I’m angry at you.’

His eyes shuttered. ‘I don’t know what to think except that I let you down.’

They stared at each other for a moment before Kainan looked away.

‘Khaji,’ she said, leaning in with a fierce whisper. ‘You did nothing of the sort. On the contrary, you were my rock, my defender and my, frankly, without being sappy, my hero. I wouldn’t have done any of this without you.’

His molten eyes whipped back to find her own. ‘You think so?’

His voice was ragged and rough, filled with longing.

She felt her body react to his need. ‘I know so. I deeply appreciate your help. And let’s not forget that you saved my life at Massimo’s mansion.’

Kainan’s eyes flared with deep emotion. ‘You’re welcome, khamila. Anytime.’

She smiled at the tender word she’d been waiting for. ‘I also need to apologise.’

His brow furrowed. ‘For what?’

‘For expecting more from you than you ready to give.’

His mouth softened, and he reached out a hand to gently touch her own.

‘Excellency!’
