He gave her a long look. ‘If I don’t return or anything goes wrong out there, and I’m irreparably injured, swear to me that you will take care of yourself first, khamila. Swear to me that you will not let the outcome of whatever may happen cause you to do something you regret.’

‘I can’t,’ she slowly said. ‘I can’t make a promise I won’t keep. I’ll do whatever I can to ensure you return with us.’

He leaned his forehead back onto hers in surrender and huffed softly. ‘Who knew a badass like me would get bested by a kick-ass woman like yourself?’

She kissed the side of his mouth. ‘Get used to it,khaji. Remember what I told you when we first met?

He gave her a quizzical glance.

‘I told you I don’t easily give up, and I don’t hold back.’

‘That you did. Was what happened earlier the no hold back portion?’

‘You’d better believe it!’

‘Fokk! Sexy, sensual, pushy and smart. I think I won the Pegasi lottery of the century,’ he said, bending his head to assault her lips again.

They emerged from the storage room many minutes later, laughing as only lovers could.

Only to be faced with two wide-eyed expressions belonging to Kage and Riv, each paused mid-journey carrying empty trays of food back to the mess.

Selene and Kainan came to a standstill.

Riv’s white irises lit up with amusement. ‘Damn! I knew all that banging noise I heard earlier wasn’t from engineering.’

‘Don’t think I’ve ever seen thekhosiso red-faced in our four decades of knowing each other,’ Kage rasped with a knowing grin.

‘He’s not red-faced. He’s het up by love,’ Riv sniggered. ‘Hey Kai, you may need a scarf!’

Kainan gave his friend an irked and puzzled look.

‘To cover that bright red love bite on your neck!’

The two Riders sauntered off, guffawing between themselves.

Leaving behind their flame-faced leader and his woman.

Kainan turned his magnificent dark head and nailed Selene with a soft lover’s glare. ‘Khamila, you’re destroying my cred.’

‘Sorry, love,’ Selene said, shrugging her shoulders. ‘I couldn’t help myself. I can lend you some of my makeup if you wish,’ she offered with a cocked eyebrow and snigger.

Just then, the ship lights dimmed, and a wave of warning lights flashed through the corridor. Kainan’s countenance immediately hardened.

‘Battle stations, Selene,’ he warned, sobering up in seconds.

He strode forward rapidly, and she sped up behind him, headed for the command deck.

‘Report?’ Kainan called out to Cilia and Mirage.

Selene ran up the command stairs and took her position, strapping in.

‘The drone we sent to scout the coordinates just sent back confirmation,’ Mirage confirmed. ‘The Technocracy’s ship is exactly where the message said it would be. But, unfortunately, it’s hovering close to the Haven Mercy. Which seems to be damaged and dead in the water.’

‘How are your calculations for the exit?’ Kainan probed.

‘Good,’ the AI confirmed. ‘I’m using detailed telemetry to fine-tune my calculations. But, unfortunately, making those complex calls takes a ton of processing power.’

‘That almost sounded like a gripe,’ Kainan teased. ‘Get as precise as you can. Remember, we need to avoid the risk of the Phantasm materialising too close to the crats.’
