Kainan’s brow furrowed in concern. ‘Then let me.’

‘Thank you,’ Selene said with some relief.

Moments later, she’d eased herself onto the spacious day bed he’d pulled out, leaning against the chaise’s luxuriously deep backrest.

He kept a polite distance, seated back in his pilot’s chair, his whisky glass in his large hand. He aimed his molten eyes at Selene. ‘Kick back, Prime. Enjoy the show. Forget the troubles of today. Tomorrow will take care of itself.’

Curling on the bed, she sipped her whisky and stared into the wild skies above. The glowing gaseous landscape was illuminated and carved by high-energy reactions and strong stellar winds. It was simply awe-inspiring, as was this moment, here with this man.

She breathed in Kainan’s windswept scent emanating from the cushions behind her. Longing flooded her every atom.

Then she remembered her father’s wise words, derived from an ancient, long-forgotten canon.‘However long the night, Selene, the dawn will always break.’

She felt an uneasy peace come over her. Whatever happened on Eden II or between her and her enigmatic host, whether dark or light, would pass, and balance would return just as life would go on. Worrying over what might be would only distract her from her cause.

With that wisdom repeating in her mind, the ache between her breastbone and thighs eased somewhat. The quiet hum of the corvette’s air vents stilled her racing mind.

Until she felt a burning heat dance over her skin.

She looked up and into molten desire.

Kainan’s eyes were fixed on her, almost aflame with the raw need she saw in them.

She couldn’t pull her eyes away from his swirling depths of sapphire gold.

They stared at each other for a long moment. Selene’s lips slowly parted, her skin flushed with heat, her heart thudding and drumming with need.

‘Khamila,’ he rasped. ‘You’re so beautiful.’

Her breath stopped.

He leaned forward, placing his elbows on his knees. ‘How long will we keep playing this game, Selene?’ he asked her hoarsely.

Holy Dunia, she thought.

Selene slowly dragged air into her lungs. ‘What game?’

He closed his eyes momentarily and opened them with a wry smile. ‘This push and pull between us.’

Her heart hammered in her chest.

‘We both want each other. Admit it,’ he challenged her huskily, leaning further forward in his chair, his voice rough and laced with desire.

Every fibre of her body screamed with a longing she fought hard against. She took a long moment to reply while he stared at her, raking her face with his heated gaze.

She spoke, carefully weighing her words. ‘I admit there may be some attraction.’

He scoffed. ‘Some attraction, khamila? We’re scorching the air between us.

She blushed hotly, and he cocked an eyebrow. ‘See?’ he said.

‘I see,’ she admitted, ducking her eyes away from his. ‘But we can’t -?’

‘But we can, Selene. We both want this. It’s inescapable.’

He rose to his feet, and she watched as he slowly stalked towards her. First, one knee hit the edge of the couch. Then the other.

‘Mirage, standby mode,’ he commanded as he fluidly fell onto all fours, stalking her on the couch. A soft tone sounded as the AI complied and regressed into the nether of the corvette’s controls. Neither Kainan nor Selene noticed.
