Forever.

Selene

Hours later, Selene ventured out of the guest room. The lair was quiet and hushed, the only sound that of a strong wind howling between the ridges outside.

She headed for the kitchen, where she rummaged for something to eat.

Pulling leftovers from the cool room, she dove into a plate of delicious sliced meats and Falasian fried rice.

It was then she noticed the sound of thumping. A low but steady beat that emanated from beyond the indoor pool.

Curious, she wandered through the crystal doors towards the source. The thuds were closer in resonance now, and she eventually pinpointed them to the wide staircase at the far end of the lap pool. Peering over the railing, she found her quarry.

Kainan.

He stood in his expansive gym on the floor below, in front of a swinging boxing bag that hung from the ceiling above.

His hands were gloveless, but he still drove them into the bag with a savagery she’d never seen before. He alternated the punches with rapid-fire side, front and roundhouse kicks.

Sweat was pouring off his body, and she noticed, with concern, silver-dark blood leaking from between his fingers from the broken skin on his knuckles.

Why was he torturing himself?

She must have made a sound because he suddenly looked up, and their eyes met. She snapped her body away and dashed back to the kitchen. She was in no mood to deal with him, with them.

Suddenly thirsty, she turned to the tap and nabbed a glass, taking a long drink of water.

‘For whatever it’s worth, I’m sorry.’

Selene whirled around at Kainan’s voice.

‘Holy Dunia! You scared me,’ she snapped, barely trying to control herself.

He’d stealthily approached in his meko panther style. Now he stood there in nothing but a pair of dark-coloured training shorts, winding a white bandage around his bloodied knuckles.

Her traitorous heart leapt as she flicked her eyes over him. While her even more mutinous pussy clenched.

Damn! All it took was seeing the man who’d given it and her so much pleasure this past week.

The swift pull toward him was followed by a slash of pain and the shame of rejection, and she winced slightly at the unexpected emotion.

Silence bloomed between them as they warily eyed each other.

‘What did you say? I missed it,’ Selene finally ground out.

Kainan’s expression was cool, cagey. ‘I said I’m sorry.’

Selene drew a ragged breath as she battled to suppress the pent-up rage leaking from her pores. ‘Sorry for what? You made me no promises, and I accept that. It was a fling, which was fun while it lasted.’

He caught the bitter edge in her voice and flinched. ‘Selene, it doesn’t have to be this way.’

‘What way would you prefer it to be, Kainan?’ she stated irately. ‘You want me to be hysterical? Crying? Begging for you to give me something you’re not ready for? Or perhaps you want me to scream at you and call you a playboy who runs hot and cold, seducing women and discarding them when he pleases?’

His face tightened, and his eyes flared, almost as if with flames. Then, he blinked violently as if she’d delivered one of the front kicks he’d just been practising right to his centre. Selene stepped back, unsure of what would happen next.

After a few angst-ridden moments, he spoke, the gravelly words painfully dragging out of him. ‘Do you really think that poorly of me?’

‘I don’t know what to believe. And I don’t think I have the right to ask why you said what you did. The fact is, you don’t want this, us, whatever it was. And I’m a big enough girl to live with it.’
