I want her but I can’t have her.

"What's the next thing on your to-do list?" I ask, letting her take over for a while.

"Lights, sound..."

"Well, let's get lights then," I say as she trails off, turning my back to her and walking away briskly.

The clacking of her heels against the tile floor follows me like a shadow as we walk. I can’t help but think about the way those heels accentuate her long legs and the curve of her ass.

Inside, I feel a growing desire to turn around and take her in my arms; to lift her petite and perfect body with ease and—

"Shit," I mumble low enough for her not to hear me.

Remembering the reason why I have to take care of her without going any further, I pay for the items before we leave the store, all the time thinking about my best friend; the cause of my inner turmoil.

Couldn't Grayson have given me a simpler task than taking care of his irresistible younger sister?

Chapter ten

Penny

"Intheend, youmade me lose a whole day of work," I say to Parker as soon as the luxury sports car pulls up to the entrance of my hotel.

He gives me a tired, yet satisfied smile. "But, it was worth it. The event will look amazing, and it’s all thanks to your help."

His words, coupled with the tilt of his head, slightly leaned back onto the seat so he can look at me better, suddenly makes me feel exposed and disarmed at the same time.

"Well, it's all thanks to my so-called perfectionism, isn't it?" I say with a sardonic smile playing on my lips as a sigh left his.

"You can be stubborn when you want to be, and honestly, you were driving me crazy. But I admit, all your proposals have been graciously approved.”

"Good," I say, trying not to let his covert compliments get to me. "A little well-meaning stubbornness comes in handy on occasion."

"I guess it does," he concedes as he looks at me with that irresistible smile of his.

Before my heart can beat any faster, I hurry to grab the door handle, looking to get out of the car and go up to my room.

"I’m glad you agree. I hope you won’t keep Brittany waiting." My tone is teasing but we can both hear the question that I’m not voicing.

Looking at Parker, I see in his eyes that my comment doesn't sit well with him.

"What are you talking about?" he asks me with a frown.

"Come on, don't play dumb. She said in front of everyone that she was expecting you for dinner, didn't she?" I remind him, wishing that the image of the short, but passionate kiss she gave him as a farewell isn’t so clearly captured in my head.

"Oh, that." Parker clicks his tongue. "I don't know what Brittany's plans are, but she can exclude me from them."

In his words, I can see what I suspected for hours. He is not, in fact, at ease in the blonde woman's presence.

Feeling an unexpected jolt of relief, I summon my courage. "Fine. If you have the night off, you can take me out for dinner then."

The surprise on Parker's face is poetic. He looks at me, not knowing what to say for a moment, but he promptly pulls himself together.

"Come on, you owe me," I say, before he can refuse. "You know very well that you have behaved like a tyrant today. The least you can do is reward me with something to eat and drink."

For a moment, Parker seems to hesitate, but, after he gives it some thought, an unexpected smile spreads across his face as he nods. "Fine. When you put it that way, I think you're right."

"Excellent," I reply, beaming. "Come get me in an hour. I'll just take a bath and change my clothes."
