Parker looks at me with a hint of amusement in his eyes. It is obvious he enjoys our exchange of banter.

He grips my hands firmly. I know those hands will always hold me, throughout my life, through the good times and the bad. He will shower me with love and protection, ready to find in me a refuge. Our love is a safe, loving place, where we will both finally find the home we have so long felt we were missing.

With our friends and family sitting in the chairs around the garden, and an unforgettable view of the San Francisco Bay in the background, I prepare to say yes to the man of my dreams. As I listen to the sounds of the waves and the birds singing, I feel that everything is perfect in that instant of my life.

"Do you, Parker Hamilton, take Penelope Gould to be your lawfully wedded wife?" the priest asks.

Parker’s gaze is locked on mine, his smile threatening to break his face in half. “I do.”

"And do you, Penelope Gould, take Parker Hamilton to be your lawfully wedded husband?"

"I do," I say with fervent affection, feeling everything in me sing with joy.

With tears in our eyes and a smile on our lips, we exchange our wedding rings, just a moment before Parker's lips and mine met to express our promise of eternal love.

Between shouts of jubilation and excitement, and with a smile on my lips, I vow to love and accept this man for the rest of my life.

"I love you," I whisper against his mouth.

"I love you," he says, smiling just as happily.

I know, with complete certainty, that I had never understood the full meaning of that word until now. I never feel it or say it as genuinely as I do in this moment, knowing I’m officially married to the man who is my first and only love.

The End
