When a few guys broke us up, the corny dude I was fighting spit out a mouth full of blood, making me stand even taller. The smile on my face couldn’t get any wider.

“Don’t look so proud, asshole. I still have the girl.” A car pulled up, and he shrugged off the strangers and got inside.

The entire time I fought to get at him to finish what I started. When the car left, they freed me. Too little, too late. When I calmed down later on at home, I realized what he said was true, and the pit of my stomach sank low at the realization that he was right.

He still had what I wanted and our little tiff earlier only pushed her closer to him. It proved him right. I went into the refrigerator and pulled out a beer. Walking to the bathroom, I checked the damage. Cut to my eyebrow, swollen eye, bruised side, my jaw hurt like a motherfucker, and my hands, too. Minimal damage. At least I had that satisfaction.

An impatient knock on my door began and didn’t let up until I opened it to see a super pissed-off Corinne standing in my doorway.

“I haven’t seen you in six months and now I get to see you twice in one day. How in the fuck did I get so lucky?” I rolled my eyes and lifted my beer to drink.

Corinne snatched the bottle from my hand and stood close. “Don’t give me that tough guy act, Seven. I know what the hell you did. Fighting David doesn’t give you a win.”

“Sure as hell feels like one.” I reached for my beer, but she moved it out of reach.

“It’s not.” She walked around me and into my apartment like she owned the place.

I sighed, closed the door, and followed her into the kitchen, where she poured my beer down the drain. One thing I didn’t miss about her was the fact that she hated when I drank beer. It was my thing. Not something I do often, but I savored the taste of it like coffee enthusiasts or wine connoisseurs would.

“That shit is expensive, Corinne,” I growled at her.

“Even more reason not to drink it.” She put her hands on her hips. “Why did you attack David? How did you even know he was the friend I was with?”

I sighed. “I saw you two in the coffee shop and when you hugged him before you got into your car.”

“And hitting him was supposed to prove what, hmm?”

“It wasn’t. While you might think that it was to prove something, it was exactly what I needed it to be.”

“What’s that?” She raised her voice. I could tell that her patience was already low.

“That I needed to blow off steam. Work some shit out.” I moved my hands in the air like I was unrolling toilet tissue. It was the perfect hand gesture to say I was untangling my shit.

“About what? There’s no reason that David should have been the reason that you unloaded on him. He had to get stitches, Seven!”

I chuckled. “Punk bitch. All he needed was a fucking bandaid.”

Corinne took a deep breath. “Why’d you hit him, Seven? Hmm? If you have personal shit, you need to work on it. Go see a therapist. Don’t go trying to bash in the skulls of random people.”

“He’s not random. He’s also not just a friend. You can cut the shit and understand that the reason that I hit him is that you kissed him. You’re the reason I lost control.” I stepped into her space, backing her up to the kitchen island. “Nobody deserves to touch you but me.”

“You messed that up, Seven. There is no more you and me. Today only confirmed why we’re not together. We don’t mix the way we should. We want different things and that’s all there is to it.”

“Is it?” I leaned into her space, daring her to move away. “What do you want, Corinne?”

“The same thing I’ve always wanted.” She swallowed, and the pull between us kicked into overdrive. “You. To be loved and adored by you. To not have to compete for attention. I want to be seen by you.”

“I could be blind as a bat, crippled, and not hear a fucking sound forever and I’d still see you. Still love and adore you.”

“But…”

“The only thing I want you to think about right now is how many times you’re going to come on my face.”

“What?” Her face contorted into one of shock, but I rushed to her lips, canceling any words from exiting.

Instead, I pulled her tongue into my mouth and caressed it with mine. Sweet, soft, and willing. Her arms went around my neck and I lifted her on top of the counter. Settled between her thighs, I lifted her skirt so she could widen her legs even more. Pressed against her, I knew I had to get buried deep inside. Unfastening my jeans, I slid them down while getting lost in our kiss. Corinne was already trying to unfasten the bra underneath her shirt.

She pulled away suddenly. “Wait.” She placed her hands on my chest and pushed me back while sliding off the counter. “Why don’t you sit up here?”
