“Hey.” Jayson coughs and clears his throat. “Have you…umm…spoken to Talynn?”
“No has something happened to her. Is she all right? I knew I should have called her first,” I say, agitated.
“Hey, hey, hey. She’s fine.”
The deep breath I take is not enough. Oscar tells me to trust my gut, and my gut is saying something is wrong.
My brother says, “Tack? Are you sitting down?” I can hear the strangulation in his voice fighting for each word.
Did something happen to one of our parents? Or to Megan and Talynn’s brother?
“Yes.” I lie.
“I’m flying out in a few minutes. I’ll be there,” he says.
“Why? What’s going on?”
“Talynn’s married.” His words are low and unsteady. I didn’t hear him correctly. He didn’t say Talynn’s married.
My mind races.
My gut clenches.
“No.” I pause. “Why the fuck are you trying to ruin the only relationship I’ve ever had?” My voice starts off quiet but rushes into a crescendo.
A million things are going through my head, but none point to Talynn being married. She’s twenty for God’s sake. Jayson consumes every insult I hurl at him, f-bomb after f-bomb.
No. Just no.
“I’ll be at your hotel in an hour. I love you, Tack.”
Fuck him. Lying sack of shit.
Screw him. He’s just jealous.
Damn him. Talynn’s not married.
Shit. It’s true or he wouldn’t be coming.
Bile travels up my esophagus as I spew the Kale Avocado protein shake over the disgusting locker room. It hits every ridge on the way up. I can’t breathe. My chest is so tight. My throat burns it’s so raw.
My teammates find me on my hands and knees puking as tears drip into the puddle of the green smoothie.

Why won’t he answer? The game has been over for hours. I sent at least ten texts and left several messages. “No this can’t be happening,” I say to the wall.
This can be cleared up. I am not married. Never been married. Their research is wrong.
I stare at my laptop screen at the document from the lawyers.
