Ignoring the part about Logan, I ask in surprise, “You know when I moved here?”

She rolls her eyes. Does she know any other expression?

“You don’t know me, but let’s go over what you know for a fact. Tell me what you know about me.”

There’s that smile again like she’s going to win this round hands down.

“Well, you’re a player.”

“Yes, I’m…a baseball player.

“Let me rephrase…a playboy.” I don’t interrupt. Wow does she have me all wrong. “You’re a rich daddy’s boy.”

She has me completely wrong. I’m a twin which trumps parents. Harper is the person I turn lean on. “My parents are wealthy, and yes, I’m my dad’s youngest son.”

She huffs so loud I can’t even hear the band for a second. “See. You’re one of those guys that has answer for everything. You think you are everything to everyone, exactly like Chaz.”

Adalee knows how to deliver a punch to a guy. No wonder she doesn’t date, except for Chaz. How long were they together? How could she put up with that guy?

“Wow, that’s low, considering your obvious opinion of him. What else do you think you know about me?”

ChapterNine

Adalee

I knowyou make my thighs clench and my stomach flutter.

But I can’t admit that to Hagan. My brain races, searching for something I know for a fact.

“You’ve been with Erika, Darrah, and Shannon,” I spit out with too much venom for someone that doesn’t care.

His eyebrows shoot up. He opens his mouth, then closes it and moves his head ever so slightly from left to right. The sun shines against his caramel brown eyes and it looks like rays of sunlight bursting through his irises.

“Well, it seems like you have me all figured out. Except you left out every fact that you were there to witness. I helped you into the weight room. I went out of my way to get a parking spot today, so you wouldn’t have to walk in your condition. I bought three drinks to keep you hydrated,” he states in a candid but bitter voice. “And I made dickwad believe you’ve moved on from what had to be a one-sided relationship.”

He takes off his royal blue Stallions baseball cap and runs his fingers through his wavy brown hair before replacing it on his head. His jaw tenses as he says, “Do you want to know what I see?”

I twirl a section of hair around my finger, letting it glide off and bounce before I re-wrap it. I know I’m being difficult, but I can’t give another man a chance to let me down. My dad. My best friend. Chaz and I won’t add Hagan to that list. They don’t want a sweet and innocent girl. They want partners to spread their legs at the drop of their dirty little baseball caps, like Chaz.

“I see a beautiful but judgmental woman sitting next to me. One that doesn’t care if she has the facts correct as long as they support her opinion.” He stops and does that thing with his hat again. He pops his lips when he says, “You know what’s sad? Now you have me hating you as much as you hate me… and I’ve never hated anyone. I don’t even hate your ex, even though I probably should.”

Hate? I don’t hate him.

The stadium erupts in cheers as the band does their traditional power K exiting the field.

Ginger and Joe come back all talky and telling us who they saw down on the lower concourse. Hagan hands Joe his keys.

“You can drive home. I’m going to go turn some accusations into facts.” Hagan’s tone is full of anger. When he glances over his shoulder, my eyes shift away as the players return for the second half.

I watch him take the stairs two at a time and I yell his name, but he doesn’t look back. Ginger nudges me and throws her arms in the air, palms up like what the hell?

Hagan did do all of those things for me, but the underlying reason is he wants in my pants. I’m the only girl not giving him shameless accolades. It’s a game with these guys. It’s always a game, and I’m not playing again.

Joe and Ginger barely speak to me the rest of the game, but Joe says, “Whatever someone else did is not Hagan’s or any other guy’s fault.”

I know he’s right, but I can’t seem to stop protecting myself from more hurt but it’s coming off as rude which isn’t my nature at all. Yeah, I’m a little sarcastic, but I’m making an ass out of myself.

After the game, I change into comfy clothes, while visions of Hagan run through my head and his red-hot stinging word.Judgmental.My phone pings with a message as I sit on my bed.
