“No. We’re trying not to pressure her. You know, sometimes we have to go through shit. The game’s starting. Talk soon. Don’t worry and have fun with your new girl.”

“Yeah, I will. Thanks. Go Kodiaks!”

He returns the sentiment and I hang up. Adalee’s curious so I offer up. “That was my sister and our friend that plays for Atlanta. They’re at the playoff game.”

The room goes crazy because they are all in complete disbelief that we all forgot about the division championship game.

“Turn on the game.”

“Where’s the controller?”

All the guys take their plates and excuse themselves from the table, leaving the couples and Logan. He stays with us and asks, “So how’s your twin doing?”

“Good.”

Adalee’s in the middle of a bite, stops and places her fajita on the blue ceramic plate. “You have a twin?”

Everyone at the table looks at each other they say in unison, “Yes.”

She looks embarrassed that everyone knew but her. But to be fair she just agreed to be my girlfriend an hour ago.

“Hap is short for Harper. The one I was talking to from three to five.”

Relief washes over her as her shoulders relax but then she squirms. “So, do you want her to move here? Is she in college?”

“I’d love for her to be here, but I thought it was important for both of us to be individuals. I screwed up.” I stretch my neck and kiss her on the cheek. “I’m sorry I led you to believe I was talking to anothergirl.”

She gives me a tight-lipped smile. “It’s fine. It explains your neediness,” she says then she stuffs her tortilla in her mouth like she’s proud of herself.

Logan cries, “Whoa.”

Joe pounds the table with his fist laughing, and Ginger gives Adalee a high-five. And even though they’re laughing at my expense, it’s the happiest I’ve ever been.

ChapterTwenty-Five

Adalee

There’s so muchI don’t know about Hagan. One thing I do know, is he knows how to turn a lady into a mumbling, moaning nymphomaniac.

Logan thrums his fingers on the table. “So, are you two together? That’s a big step.”

He looks at me, wearing Hagan’s gray Stallions Baseball shirt. Heat creeps up my chest and into my neck. I knew what I was doing—my clothes were clean, but his shirt is soft and smells like him. After what happened in his room, I want him next to me, on me, all of the time. He’s mine.

Hagan bails me out, saying, “I wore her down. She finally realized what a catch I am.”

Logan and I burst out laughing and then Logan leans down. “He’s got it bad for you, Little A. Don’t hurt him. He’s fragile.”

The doorbell rings and in walks a raven haired girl, heading straight for Logan.

“Screw you, Mr. Heisman,” Hagan says.

Logan just smiles as he places his hand on her back and they walk up the stairs, presumably to his room.

Joe and Ginger grab beers and we all sit down to watch the Chicago Kodiaks play the Arizona Cobras. The winner of this game will go to the World Championships. It’s surreal watching the game with Hagan who knows nearly everyone on the team. But it’s Mac who jumps out of the bean bag when his cousin, Patrick Callaghan, hits a homerun in the third inning.

Joe gets up when the inning is over and glances over his shoulder. “Hagan, want a beer?”

“Nah, I’m good.”
