“Because you’re not twenty-one.”

My brows furrow. “Neither is Mali, but you guys have let her bartend before.”

He shushes me and glances around as he steps closer. “Keep your voice down. Mali did it during the off season. That’s different. We’re less likely to get caught then.”

I shrug. “My fake ID looks real enough. Even a cop couldn’t figure it out.”

“Dude,” Mali interrupts. “Why are you begging him to let youwork?”

My lips clamp shut as I realize she has a point.

Cam chuckles. “Thanks for the offer, though.”

I nod and watch him go back over to the bar, and then my gaze switches to where Hayes smiles as he serves someone their drink. He looks so happy, and I always love when he’s like this. It always makes me want to stay in his orbit.

Playful Hayes is my second favorite Hayes.

“Ah,” Mali says. “I get it now. You wanted an excuse to be near Hayes.”

I scoff. “No. I was just trying to be helpful.”

She gives me her bestI don’t believe you for shitlook as she nods. “Sure, you were.”

Ugh.“Fuck you. Can you blame me? I’m losing my damn mind here.”

“He still hasn’t given you anything to go off of?”

“Not. A. Thing. It’s like he gets off on torturing me.”

She goes to take a sip of her soda. “He’s been getting off, all right.”

“You’re Satan,” I deadpan.

Mali laughs into her drink. “What? I think you’re the only person I know that is having the best sex of your life and still complaining about it.”

“Because that’s the thing,” I whine. “It’s not the best sex of my life. I mean, it’s amazing. I’m not saying it’s not. He’s insanely talented. But the best sex was two summers ago, when he loved me just as much as he fucked me. He had this way of making me feel like I was the only woman he had eyes for.”

“You’restillthe only woman he has eyes for,” she argues.

A heavy sigh leaves my mouth. “I know, but I’m telling you. Something’s different. He’s still distant and keeping me shut out, and I don’t know how to fix it.”

She glances back at the bar and then smiles at me. “Well, for starters, you could go talk to him. Maybe having his attention on you for a bit will help.”

“For no reason? Mal, he’s busy.”

Grabbing my water, that’s only halfway empty, she throws it back and drains the rest of it, slamming it on the counter when she’s done. “There. Now you need another drink. And I need to pee.”

She drags me toward the bar on her way to the bathroom and all but shoves me toward the empty seat. Hayes raises his brows at me just slightly, and I know I have no choice now.

At the last second, an idea comes to mind and I smirk, going up to the bar and sitting down—exactly what I’m not supposed to do.

“You know you can’t sit there,” he tells me, standing there with his hat on backward and his arms crossed over his chest as he leans back against the counter.

I pretend to look around. “Me? I’m just trying to get a drink.”

He gives me a smile that has me practically ready to come on the spot and pushes off the counter to come closer. “Okay. What can I get for you?”

“A jack and coke.”
