What. The. Fuck.

WAS IT STUPID TOleave some beach bum in charge of my bar? Absolutely. But if Cam has a problem with it, he should’ve thought about that before he let Laiken do something this fucking reckless. I stare at the app that shows all of our locations, seeing Cam and Mali are across the street from where she is, but that’s not close enough, in my opinion.

My heart is in my throat as my truck flies down the road. If a cop sees me now, I’m going to end up getting arrested, because he’ll definitely pull me over for the way I swerve into oncoming traffic to get around the person driving under the speed limit. And I don’t care how many lights end up behind me—I’m not stopping until I get to Laiken.

“Come on, come on, come on.”

My truck tires come straight off the ground as I fly over a hill, and I nearly lose control when it lands. But that’s not about to slow me down. I hear the skid on the pavement as I make the turn, and finally, the cemetery comes into view.

I slam on my brakes and throw it into park as I jump out.

She has to be around here somewhere.

The tall stones and the mausoleum in the center make it hard for me to see anything. And my biggest fear of all is that I’m going to see her phone on the ground somewhere, with Laiken nowhere to be found.

Can’t track her phone if she doesn’t have it.

“Laiken!” I roar, but I don’t hear anything in response. “Fuck.”

Panic rushes through me as I keep looking around, screaming her name. This is why I don’t fucking want her going places alone. It’s not safe! And what the hell is she doing in a cemetery, anyway? That’s just asking for something horrible to happen.

“Laiken!” I scream again, and by the grace of God, I get an answer this time.

“H.”

Spinning around, I see her standing there, completely unharmed. Relief floods my whole body, washing away the frantic anxiety. Despite how insanely angry I am right now, I can’t stop myself from marching over and pulling her into my arms.

With her body pressed against mine, I feel my blood pressure drop closer to normal levels, but not enough to ignore what the hell she’s doing out here.

“What the fuck is wrong with you?” I ask painfully. “You could’ve gotten yourself killed!”

She frowns, and I can see she knows how stupid this was. “I was trying to end this. You’re trying to take on so much, and you claim you’re fine, but I know you’re not. I just want you to be okay.”

I take her face into my hands and stare into her eyes. “Laiken, if something happens to you, I willneverbe okay again.”

A tear slips out, and I can tell she’s frustrated. We all are. This is the last thing we want to be dealing with. But her risking her life to save mine isnotthe answer here.

Still, as mad at her as I am right now, I can’t stop myself from pressing my lips to hers. She sighs into it, and her hands come to rest on my arms.

It’s no surprise we’ve both been on edge so much. With Cam and Mali in the house, sex is pretty much impossible. We still take every opportunity we can get, but it’s not the same. I miss the time when we would just spend the whole day all over each other. When we’d make our way through the house, unable to keep our hands to ourselves.

“You’re going to give me a heart attack,” I tell her, with a little less venom in my tone than she probably deserves. “Don’t ever do anything like this again. Okay? It’s not worth the risk.”

She nods, with my forehead pressed against hers. “Okay, but you have to give a little, too. You can’t take everything on by yourself.”

I can’t help but smirk. “Isn’t that exactly what you were trying to do tonight?”

“No,” she nods across the street. “I had eyes on me.”

Looking over, I see Cam and Mali in the window of an upstairs apartment building, like a couple of horrible spies. A goddamn blind person could see them. And when I see the binoculars Cam is holding to his face, I flip him off.

I’ll deal with his ass later.

“Lai,” I deadpan. “What the fuck were they going to do if someone showed up and tried taking you? Jump out the window?”

She chuckles, realizing how obnoxiously stupid this is.

“Or maybe they’d take their eyes off you so they could come down the stairs.” I snap as I have an ah-ha moment. “No, I know. They’d wait for an elevator. Really take their time.”
