The door opens behind me, and Hayes plasters a smile across his face. “Dev, you’re early! I thought you weren’t coming until next week.”

Oh, shit.

“I had nothing better to do so I figured I’d move my trip up,” she tells him. “Besides, I missed Mom.”

“Just Mom?” he teases.

I can picture the way she’s probably rolling her eyes right now. “Shut up. You know I missed you, too.”

Staying completely still, I watch Hayes walk around the bar. “It’s a gorgeous day outside. Let’s go catch up outside.”

“Hayes, it’s literally raining.”

Mali snorts, but I really wish she wouldn’t drag more attention in my direction.

“What do you have to drink in this place?” his sister asks. “I’m so thirsty.”

Hayes sighs. “You know, funny thing. Our drinks aren’t actually all that great. Go figure. Let’s go get something somewhere else.”

Okay, how he went so long without Cam knowing that Hayes and I were secretly hooking up is a mystery to me, because he is the shittiest liar. Maybe he should take Cam’s couch. They’d go well together.

“Why are you being so weird?” Dev questions skeptically.

I watch my brother give her a small smile before he cringes, and I know she’s seen me. I can feel her eyes burning into the back of my head. And well, I may as well turn around so I can defend myself when she inevitably attacks me.

Slowly spinning around, I find his sister glaring back at me. “Hi, Dev.”

She gives me the dirtiest look I think I’ve ever seen her give anyone. “Don’thime. What the fuck are you doing here?”

“I came when Hayes got into the motorcycle accident,” I say, but I stop when her eyes widen drastically, and she turns to her brother.

“You were in a motorcycle accident, and you didn’t tell me?” she screeches. “You fucking toldherbut you didn’t tellme?”

Hayes tries to shush her. “Please remember we’re open and there are customers in here.”

“It’s noon.”

“Which means they’re still nursing killer hangovers,” he points out. “And your screeching is not the best thing for that.”

She rolls her eyes. “I can’t fucking believe this. Does Mom know she’s back?”

“Yes,” he answers simply, and a part of me wonders if she told him I came there, or if he told her that I was back. “And she’s supportive of whatever I choose to do about it.”

Devin scoffs. “You can’t possibly be thinking of getting back with her. After the way she fucking broke you like that? Are you kidding me?”

There may not be many people here, but the ones that are, are now paying attention to her. She’s getting an audience, and I don’t think Hayes wants our dirty laundry to be the latest drunken gossip. I know I don’t.

I look to Cam for help and thankfully, he comes to my aid. “H, maybe you guys should take this upstairs.”

Devin crosses her arms over her chest. “I’m only going if she does. I have some things I want to say to her.”

Sighing, I stand up. “Lead the way then.”

As Devin heads toward the stairs, Mali goes to come with us but I instantly stop her. “No. You already don’t like her, and I’m sure what’s about to come out of her mouth is going to piss you off. You stay here.”

She doesn’t look happy about it, but she huffs and stays in place. Hayes sighs heavily and runs his fingers through his hair as we start to follow Devin.

“What are the chances she’s going to slaughter me and use my blood to paint her room?” I ask him.
