Instead of answering, I flip him off and go back outside. Laiken is on the phone with her back to me, but it’s her words that get my attention.

“You’re the best,” she says. “I’ve got to go, but I’ll text you.” There’s a short pause and then…”Love you, too. Bye.”

It feels like all the air gets knocked straight out of my lungs. I can’t breathe. Can’t even fucking remember how.

“All good?” Mali asks.

She nods. “Nolan is shipping me some of my clothes. As much as Ilovesharing your wardrobe, I need my own things.”

“I get it, but just so you know, mi closet es tu closet.”

Laiken giggles. “That’s not Spanish.”

Mali waves it off. “Whatever. You’re the one who only packed for a couple days.”

“Okay, first of all, I was in a rush and wasn’t exactly in the right mindset to pack. You’re lucky I remembered to grab underwear.”

“You didn’t. You were stuck in your motel room after a shower and needed me to bring you some, remember?”

“Shush,” Laiken mutters. “We agreed not to ever mention that again.”

“I lied,” Mali says with the biggest grin.

Laiken sighs. “I’m just glad I’ll be able to wear some of my own clothes again. Nolan is a lifesaver.”

“Yeah, yeah. Tell me all about someone else stealing you from me. It’s fine. I like the pain.”

My chest practically caves in on itself. With the way Laiken has been talking to me, the way she’s beenlookingat me, I thought there might be a chance for us. But right now, there’s only one thing on my mind.

Who the fuck is Nolan?

AS THE NIGHT GOESon, I can feel myself getting more and more irritated. Each time Laiken takes her phone out of her pocket, there’s this dire urge to rip it out of her hands and see what it says. It’s no secret that I’ve always been possessive when it comes to her, but this feels like another level.

It’s not like the concept of Laiken moving on never occurred to me. The possibility of her being with someone else tormented me constantly. But seeing the way she smiles down at her phone is something else entirely.

It burns.

Literally makes me want to throw myself into the fire just to keep her attention on me and off of him.

Fucking Nolan.Sounds like an arrogant prick, if you ask me. He probably wears khakis and dress shoes every day because he thinks it looksclassy.Let him come around here and I’ll show him exactly what I think about him texting my goddamn wife.

As another text comes in and she laughs the same way she used to do with me, I can’t handle it anymore. I fly up out of the chair so fast that Cam startles beside me.

“Where are you going?” he asks.

I don’t trust my voice enough to respond so I just hold up my empty glass instead, hoping that’s enough of an answer for him. The bar is clearing out a bit, with everyone either heading home because it’s late, or outside to enjoy the fire, but there’s still a few who hang around.

Walking around the bar, I slam my cup onto the counter hard enough for it to break. Glass falls around my fist as I mutter a few choice words.

“Everything okay?”

Of course she followed me.

I look up and see Laiken staring back at me. She looks worried, and when she sees the glass, her eyes widen. Coming closer, she tries to help me clean it up, but I stop her.

“I’ve got it.”

I don’t need to owe her any fucking favors.
