That’s it. No heart like it used to have. No I love you that I wish I had tattooed onto my skin so I could read it over and over, reminding myself that there was actually a time where he did love me. But I can’t be mad.

I didn’t even have the decency to sign my name on the three word note I left for him to find.

“Is that from him?” Nolan asks.

Immediately, I start to wonder what she knows about Hayes. “Yeah. He’s not here. Just said to lock up before we leave.”

She nods but says nothing, and I can feel the way she’s staring at me. I look over at her and sure enough, she’s watching me expectantly, with chin rested on her hand.

“What?” I feign innocence.

Her eyes roll exasperatedly. “Don’twhatme. Who is he? What is this house? You used to live here?”

My head falls back as I realize I have no choice but to explain it all to her.Fuck.I was hoping I wouldn’t have to. At least not until I knew what’s going on with us. It’s hard to explain something you don’t have all the answers to. But I guess here goes nothing.

I take a deep breath, knowing my words are going to shock her. “He’s my husband.”

Just as expected, her jaw hits the floor.

I spend the next fifteen minutes explaining the story of Hayes and me to Nolan. From when I started to have a thing for him, to when we finally crossed that line, eventually leading up to us getting married and me leaving only a month later. Of course, I leave outwhyI left. I stay vague, telling her that I had to but not telling her why.

When I’m finally done, it looks like she isn’t breathing. Hell, I don’t think she’s blinked at all since I started. I wave my hand in front of her face, but she barely reacts.

“Did I break you?” I joke.

She shakes herself out of it. “Wait a damn minute. You had a husband who looked likethatand youleft?”

Ugh, yep. Just rub it in. It’s fine. It’s not like I cry myself to sleep every night over it lately.

“Yeah,” I answer, rubbing the back of my neck nervously. “I know. He’s gorgeous.”

“He’s sex on fucking legs, that’s what he is.” Then, her eyes widen. “Oh…shit. I need to tell you something.”

Dread washes over me as I see the way she cringes. “What happened?”

“I may have propositioned him last night and asked if he wanted to join me in the guest room,” she says shyly.

It starts as a chuckle. A small laugh that just bubbles out a little. But it quickly builds until I fall back onto the bed, cackling loudly.

Don’t get me wrong, Nolan is beautiful. Supermodel status if she had the work ethic to be one. But according to Cam, Hayes won’t even flirt back with a girl if she tries to hit on him at the bar. There was no way he was ever going to fuck one of my friends while I was sleeping in the other room.

“What the hell did he say?” I ask as I finally start to calm down.

She pouts. “He said he was all right and to have a good night.”

“Yeah, that sounds like him.” Always such a gentleman.

Hayes has a way of letting girls down without them even realizing that they’re being rejected until he’s long gone. It’s an impressive skill set, actually, and probably very useful for when he’s working at the bar. There’s nothing more awkward than having to turn someone down, but when you look like him, I guess you get used to it.

“Ugh,” Nolan huffs. “I can’t believe you’re married to someone that hot and you just failed to mention it.”

I look around the room once more, noticing there’s nothing that shows he’s been in here at all lately. Even his phone charger isn’t on his nightstand. Nor are the empty water bottles I always had to get rid of when they started to pile up. It’s just…lifeless.

We shared so many good memories in this room and planned to make so many more.

It was all so perfect, and now it’s gone.
