“Oh misery… what have I done to deserve this?”

“Transport will be here shortly.”

“Yay,” Landon mutters as he closes his eyes. I can’t tell if he’s actually tired or just trying to get Valerie to leave.

Valerie hesitates as she stares at him before reaching down and squeezing his hand. “I’m glad to see you’re alright,” she says.

Landon opens one eye. “Thanks… it’s not going to stop me from asking Deus to make another doll of you since the first one seems to be defective.”

“I wouldn’t expect any less,” she says.

They smile at each other in some weird love language that they seem to only share between them. It’s like three-quarters hate, one-quarter love and far too complex for me, but they appear to enjoy it.

CHAPTERTEN

LANDON

“What the hell is this?” Valerie asks as the armored vehicle she’s hauling us around in draws to a stop in front of Superheroes United. There’s a crowd of people that the guards are doing their best to push away but there’s one single person they seem to be making no progress with.

My brother.

It’s harder when he’s built like a fucking truck and nothing can faze him.

The driver veers around the crowd and into the small opening the guards have made but isn’t prepared at all for Brandon to throw himself in front of the car.

The noise he makes when the driver hits him is quite loud. The car climbs up onto something before slamming to a stop, front end still up in the air. All I know is that the sudden jarring makes the pain spike that I’d been mostly able to ignore until now.

“What the fuck? What the fuck?” the driver, a man named Ned, cries.

Valerie sighs as loudly as she possibly can so we’re all aware of her displeasure about the situation. “Well, either drive forward or backwards, you’re literallystopped on top of him.”

“He’s fine,” I assure them.

“Do I go forward? Is it better to go forward? Should I go backwards?” Ned sounds extremely uncertain.

Deus unlocks his door. “I’ll check. Can I just say that you guys are absolutelya blastto be around? I’m not sure I’ve ever had this much fun.” He gets out and looks down. “Hmm… it does seem to be a pickle. I can confirm, you are definitely on top of his body.”

Why he had to get out of the vehicle to tell that when the car is sitting at an odd angle, I have absolutely no idea. That’s when I see Mom and Dad standing just off to the side watching the scene.

“Drive forward!” Mom yells.

“No, backward!” Dad yells from beside her before seeing me. “Honey!”

“Oh, dear!” Mom says and then they’re both rushing forward to hug me through the open car door. “We heard you got hurt!”

“Ma! Hey, Ma! How’s Landon?” Brandon says from somewhere under the car.

“I’m good, Brandon. How are you?” I ask.

“I’m kind of stuck, but that’s okay! I’m just happy I get to see you… I guess I can’t see you now, but I kind of got to see you. I saw you seconds before your driver ran me over!”

“Yeah? That was fun. Did you have fun?” I ask.

“I mean… it was alright. Did you have fun?”

“Eh. I just got stabbed by a crazy lady.”

Brandon laughs because he’s evil. “Remember when we were kids, and you’d throw knives at me? Ha ha! That was fun!”
