“Who brought the cookies? Theyaredelicious,” I say as I reach for another. I’ve only had one or maybe four so far. I mean, who is really counting?

“Wasn’t me,” Valerie says.

We all look to Wyatt who shakes his head. That’s when all of us snap our attention to Ellison.

“Gasp,” Deus says instead of just gasping. “He poisoned them. Fucking hell, we’re all going to die.” He lifts his rifle like he’s just going to off Ellison for the potential poisoning instead of verifying first.

“I’m too pretty to die,” Lex says as he shakes the cookie like it’s betrayed him.

“Eh, I welcome death with arms wide open if it tastes like this,” I say as I scoot the container over to me since they’re all being dramatic.

“Thank you, Ellison,” August says, whichI guessfeels like a suitable response to someone giving us this delicious treat.

Ellison stares at him for a moment like he’s positive there’s a trick to this before giving him a curt nod. “Youare welcome. I thought maybe I would reward the group with cookies if you all listened, but I see it just made you more distracted. I havealsostated that I believe we should meet them in person, but we have to wait for a higher-up to approve this.”

“Or we could just look at their file, find where they live, stalk them, and get the information,” I say, which soundsmuchsuperior.

“Do you hear nothing wrong with what you just said?” Ellison asks.

“He forgot the torture. I am a master of bondage. I like to tie up my victims and make them beg,” Deus announces.

“Like… kinky beg?” Lex asks, and I’m kind of curious too.

Deus shifts his eyes toward us and gives us a grin. “I’ll let you decide the answer to that. Or if you’reverycurious, I can show you firsthand.”

Lex seems to decide that he’d rather take his chance with the poisoned cookies.

And I decide that maybe we should stay on task… at least a little bit. “Anyway, what I was trying to say before we started off on Deus’s path to prison was that the reporter I forget the name of just texted me that he thinks he might have a tip.”

“Dave,” August helpfully supplies because he’s a sweetheart who retains absolutely useless information.

“It’s totally a setup. We should wait until midnight and infiltrate his room,” Deus says.

“Or we could go now. He gave me his office address,” I say as I flash them my phone screen. “And if itisa setup, we’ll at least all be ready to kick some ass. Some of us more than others. Oh, Ellison, you can go with us and maybe you can see through the illusions if we’re tricked again.”

He looks to Valerie, who shrugs. “They’re going to do whatever they want anyway. You might as well go with them. Get dressed and ready. Deus… I grudgingly got you a fireproof suit in case Lex needs to use his power. I… thoroughly didn’t want to but was given limited choice in the matter when August looked sad after I mentioned that lighting you on fire could help you feel closer to the demons you love.”

“That’s so very kind of you that it’s mildly disgusting. Thank you!” Deus gives her a forced-looking smile.

Valerie grunts and the group of us break off to get dressed in our ridiculous wear. I grudgingly put on a black suit August had gotten for me. The only reason I comply with this ridiculousness is because I’m rather fond of not getting fried to a crisp by Lex. And while I stubbornly hate wearing these stupid suits, Idolove seeing August in them and feel like he needs to be made aware of this.

“The moment I see you in your suit, I want you to bend me over and fuck me,” I say as I watch his face so I can see the moment what I said registers. “It does something to my loins and my heart.”

August’s attention snaps right over to me. “Well… I wish you wouldn’t say things like that because now that’s all I want to do, and instead, I have to go out there where that isn’t an option.”

I grin at him and decide to give him a kiss instead. Zacia watches me with love and adoration until I give her a kiss and tell her I’ll be back soon. Then she slips through the crack in the door like there are no bones in her body.

“Sweetie, you can’t come. There are bad people out there who want to murder us,” I explain. She seems less than interested in listening to anything I have to say as she prances down the hallway in front of me. Quickly, I pick her up and find Valerie who I pass her off to.

“What is this?” she asks, scowl already primed and ready.

“I want you to watch my baby. If anything happens to her…” I shake my head. “You don’t want to know. If something happens, you… might as well dig your own grave.”

“Leave her in yourroom,” she says like the monster she is.

“What if she gets scared?”

Valerie scowls while Zacia remains adorable as fuck. Because absolutelyno onecan resist my Balzac, Valerie sighs heavily but takes Zacia with her. I see my poor baby peering over Valerie’s shoulder, questioning what she’s done to deserve this.
