“Was anyone killed?” I ask in concern. “We did everything we could to try to move people out of harm’s way.”

That’s when Valerie’s phone starts ringing. I see that it’s the facility Nolan is in, and since she’s clearly busy, I hold my hand out and she lets me take it.

I accept the call with a “Hello?”

“A-August? Oh, thank god. Landon’s with you?” Nolan asks.

“He is not… he’s headed to see you,” I say.

“Fuck. It’s a setup. I read the mind of a guard who works for Superheroes United. He was here talking to a man, and I could only read bits of his mind from this distance, but he said something about separating Landon… They speculated that if they forced Landon to overextend his power, he’d be weak enough that they could take him.”

“Fucking hell,” I say as I try to quickly get to my phone. Deus beats me to it and pulls it out before calling Landon and putting it on speaker. Anxiety eats at me as I listen to it ring, but soon I get to hear Landon’s voice.

“Hello, babe, already miss me?”

“I sure do!” Deus says before adding, “Babe.”

I quickly yank the phone toward me. “Landon, there’s been a bit of a problem… please tell me you can use your powers.”

“Nope.”

“Fuck.”

“Mind telling me what’s going on?” Landon asks.

Quickly, I repeat what Nolan just told us and hear silence on the other end.

“It’s okay, Landon. I will talk you through this,” Deus says, sounding extremely confident.

“Dear god,” Landon says, sounding the exact opposite of Deus who seems almost excited about this new turn of events.

“We have to catch up with them,” I say, looking around, not quite sure what I’m going to do. Do I take the armored truck? That will be an absolute pain in the ass to get through the city with how busy the area is.

“I need a small car,” I say in my panic.

“What is happening?” Valerie asks.

Thankfully, Ellison fills her in as I find a vehicle with a gawking man sitting in it. I don’t even think he’s one of our men, but his car is facing the right direction, so I yank open the door and shove him out into the street.

“What the hell are you doing!” Valerie yells as she rushes after me, but I’m already in the vehicle and Deus and Ellison clamber in after me.

“This is extremely, highly illegal,” Ellison informs me.

“Yo, dude, can we borrow your car?” Deus asks while holding his gun in a rather threatening manner.

“O-O-O-Of course,” the man stutters out in terror.

“See? Full permission,” Deus says.

I accelerate as panic eats through me at the idea that I’ve left the love of my life in the hands of the enemy.

“Are you tracking his phone?” Ellison asks. “Or just driving like a madman?”

“One hundred percent the latter,” I realize.

He reaches out and takes Valerie’s phone that I hadn’t realized I still had. Hell, Nolan’s probably still on it, but Ellison switches to an app I’ve never even seen, forcing me to realize that Valerie is clearly a stalker… and makes me wonder if she knows it was me who TP’d her house last Christmas with the SAVCGEM.
