“But then how could you talk?” I ask.

“Illusions are very peculiar things… it’s fascinating what the brain will try to believe when given a reason to believe it.”

“The hardest thing to learn when using my power was controlling separate things at once. Is it the same for you?” I ask.

“Very much. I basically have to split my thoughts to tell this one to wave you over and what numbers I’m reading off the computer while the other one tries to remain naturally engaged in the conversation. It gets more difficult past three.”

“That’s fascinating! You’d be unstoppable if you were a fighter,” Deus says.

“Who ever said I couldn’t fight?” Ellison says as his eyes shift over to Deus’s.

Deus stares at him for such an extremely long time that I question if he’s going to confess his undying love to him in the next moment, but instead, he simply goes, “Fight me!”

“Deus, we’re in a hurry, not… fighting each other,” I remind him.

“Ah, right. I forgot. I’ll drive,” Deus says as he nears the car.

“You will not drive,” Ellison says as he shoves Deus hard toward the back seat. “I got everyone clothes to wear to blend into the shadows better. I didn’t want to take them inside where they’d be searched and I’d be questioned, so you’ll have to change in the car. Landon, I see that I didn’t have to waste the time.”

I grin as I look at my all-black attire. “I just always dress like I’m ready for a funeral or a robbery,” I assure him.

He shrugs as I realize that under his black suit, he’s wearing a black button-up so that he’s also all in black. Much to his disgust, judging by his face, Deus gets into the passenger seat. I sit in the middle of the back seat between Lex and August.

“So, Ellison,” Deus starts.

“No. Asmodeus, we should remain silent,” Ellison says.

“Tattoos, huh?”

“If you mention one more thing about my tattoos, I will make it hurt,” Ellison warns as he pulls the car out and heads down the lane toward the front gate.

“How much will it hurt? Because it’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make.”

“I would also be willing to sacrifice Deus to hear more,” I assure them.

“Get changed and get into the trunk. The car will be looked into when we pass security on the way out. I’ll tell you when you can get out.”

Everyone besides me changes and then I cram on top of August’s lap so that when we get near the checkpoint, the four of us can do our best to cram into the trunk by lowering the back seat while Ellison drives. August willingly goes in first, so I practically squish him as I come in. Lex crams in next to me and Deus nearly kills us by getting inside and pulling the seat up, closing us in darkness.

It takes me all of three seconds to realize that this is not right at all.

“Deus, why didn’t you just turn invisible? You don’t need to be back here! There’s already not enough room!”

“I know, but Ellison said I had to after I tried pushing up his sleeve. His exact words were, ‘If you don’t get in the trunk right now, I’m going to take your rifle and shove it up your ass.’”

“So we have to suffer?” I growl as Ellison hits a hole. I’m pretty sure he hit it on purpose because it rattles my brain and I hear someone’s head smack something.

The car slows and then takes off again but still Ellison doesn’t tell us we can come out. I’m pushed forward a bit by August and end up accidentally groping Lex, but still, nothing from Ellison.

“We’ve been kidnapped,” Lex decides.

“I mean, with his skill level when it comes to illusion, he very well could be the bad guy, has orchestrated a way to get all of us to leave the protection of Superheroes United without telling a single soul, and is well on his way to handing us over to his evil overlord,” Deus says. “It weirdly turns me on.”

“For fuck’s sake, donotget turned on in here when I’m pressed against you,” Lex says. “Excuse me, Ellison, can we please come out?”

“Not yet,” Ellison says before turning the music up.

“There’s a pull tab,” I say. “My parents locked me in the trunk a few times as a kid—they thought it was hilarious—but there’s a way to drop the seat.”
