“Yeah, but I thought I heard something and then you guys were gone.”

“Heard what?” I ask as I look past him.

“I don’t know… it was probably just someone from the facility.”

“Come on,” August says. “I want to get out of here before we get caught. We have the answers, so let’s go.”

“Yeah,” I say as I push Lex in front of me so I can keep a better eye on him as we move through the field and out to the road.

Ellison is standing outside the car, staring at his phone as we reach the road and start across it.

“Hey!” Deus shouts from behind us. “Hey!”

I look back to see what he’s shouting about when we’re supposed to quietly get in the vehicle and head off on our way a moment before I hear a gunshot. Ellison is snapped back as he looks up in shock before slipping and falling into the ditch a second before Deus shoots Lex right in the head.

Lex stumbles before staggering forward and dropping down right in the middle of the road, blood spilling out around his head as his glassy eyes stare.

The shock of seeing Lex lying dead in front of me hits me hard, and for a moment, I can’t help but question what I’ve just seen.

“What the… fuck,” I whisper as I look over at Deus and shove him back. “What the fuck did you do? You fucking killed Lex! Why would you kill Lex?”

“It’s an illusion, Landon! Snap out of it!” Deus yells. “He just shot Ellison.”

“What?” I ask. “No! You did! You shot… you shot Ellison and Lex… and…” I look toward August who looks as shaken up as me.

“Landon, do you trust me?” Deus asks.

“Fuck,” I say as I let go of him and look down at Lex… is it Lex? Maybe… maybe it’s not Lex… but it sure looks like him.

Deus shoves us away from the body, toward the ditch. “Ellison!”

“Fucking hell…” Ellison groans from where he lies on his back. “Who the fuck did you two bring back? Who the fuck just shot me?”

It really looked like Lex… and August and I just brought him back. We literally brought him right to Ellison who he shot…

Deus tears his suit jacket open, which seems to alarm Ellison even more than being shot.

“The buttons!”

“Fuck the buttons, you got shot in the chest,” he says, sounding panicked as he tries to fight through multiple layers while Ellison smacks him off. He’s still quite nimble for a man on the verge of dying.

“I’mfine,” Ellison urges. “I don’t know. It didn’t hit me. It fucking stings, but it didn’t… I’m not dying.”

Deus pulls something out and it takes mefaaarrrtoo much time to register that he’s holding the stupid little doll he made Ellison. The one Ellison proclaimed was immediately going in the trash. The very one he vowed to never keep.

“He saved your life,” Deus says as he plucks the bullet out of the doll’s chest. “He really saved your life.”

Ellison looks horrified for some reason, maybe because he was caught carrying the thing around, but I would think he’d be happy to be alive… even at the expense of dealing with Deus.

“While I would absolutelyloveto know how that bundle of… stuff saved his life, where is Lex?” I ask.

“Oh shit,” August says as he turns from Ellison and looks back out into the cornfield. The person on the road no longer looks like Lex; instead, it’s a woman I’ve never seen before.

Deus helps Ellison to his feet before sticking the lifesaving doll into Ellison’s chest pocket. “I didn’t see him in the cornfield,” Deus says. “I couldn’t see you guys until I came out of it and noticed that you two were running off with someone I didn’t recognize.”

Rushing across the road with the others right behind me, I run into the cornfield and use my power to push the stalks over just enough that I can see down the rows, but I don’t see Lex anywhere. August quickly moves toward the area we’d lost Lex in when I hear something strange in the distance.

I still so the sound of the leaves rustling can’t distract from the noise. “What is that sound?”
