“If you want two completely different things from different people, how will you ever be happy?” he asks. “Let’s say you find a woman who lets you do all the things you want to do. She isn’t bothered by you joining her on every outing she has, she’s just as into you as you’re into her. She loves you. She doesn’t want anybody else.”

“Uh-huh,” I say, waiting for the rest.

“Well, first of all, I think you’d get bored, but you also want someone to take care of you. You want the same attention you give a woman, but you don’t want it from a woman, do you?”

My face morphs before I even realize it. “No, I don’t want a woman to possess me.”

“Do you want a man to possess you? And if you find one who can, what about the compulsion to obsess over women?”

“It’s notobsession,” I say with a bite. I take a breath and drop my head back. “Guess I need one of each.”

I hear him sigh, and when I lift my head, I find him leaning back. “You’re exhausting.”

“Yes, I’m quite the handful. That’s why I have the problems I have.”

“You’ll never be satisfied.”

“Will you? Tell me you don’t miss it. The thrill. The rush of adrenaline. I know you want to do it again.”

He ignores me. “I get why you snapped. The cheating. The lies. Most people want to kill the person who cheats on them, but usually, they have a stronger grip on—”

“Sanity?”

“I was gonna say morals, but okay. Sanity works too. But why? Why are you like that? Your parents?”

I stand up and walk to the kitchen. “That’s another question for another day, but feel free to tell me what made you snap. Obviously it was your parents, but what did they do?”

He follows me. “Perhaps another day for that, too.”

I pour us both two fingers worth of whiskey. “So, there will be another day,” I say, passing him the glass. “Not gonna try to off me?”

“Are you planning on killing me? Or is that just reserved for women?”

I grin and take a sip. “I don’t plan these things. Not really.”

“So, then maybe I should take care of you right now. I could live in peace without the worry that you’ll run your mouth or decide to try to kill me one day.”

“I wouldn’t kill you, Ezra.”

“Youcouldn’tkill me, Kaspian.”

I bite my bottom lip before a smile takes over. “Don’t underestimate me.”

“Don’t play with me.”

“Like this?” I say, chancing a step in his direction as I slide my fingers into his waistband again.

His hand is around my throat in an instant. “If you even think about saying anything to anyone, I will end you before you even realize I’m a threat.”

“You’re always a threat.”

“Don’t forget it.” He eases his grip but keeps his hand in place. It’s probably because he just likes touching me, but I don’t mind it.

“We could work together.”

“What we do is different, and I don’t work well with others.”

My fingers unsnap the button before dragging his zipper down. “We’re similar, you and me. It could be fun.”
