I take a deep breath when I’m out in the cool air and drop my head against the wall. My phone dings in my hand.

802-555-9066:Tick Tock

I don’t haveto question who it is, but I still have an inquiry.

Me:How did you get my number?

As I waitfor his reply, Jason bursts through the door. “Hey, man. Fucking Cora is throwing up in the bathroom, so like the good guy that I am, I’m gonna make sure she gets home. Nobody else wants their night to end. Think Samantha will notice?”

I want to say probably not, but I do what I do and lie. “Yeah, man. She better. You’re the only one who offered to help her friend.”

He smiles and nods like he’s excited that I agree. “Everything okay with you?” he says gesturing to the phone.

I look down and another message appears.

802-555-9066:Tell Will to get lost before I make sure he’s never found.

Me:Fucking stalker.

It takeseffort to not smile, but I look up and shake my head. “Family emergency. My mom is trying to reach me about my dad. He’s been sick for a while. I should head home and call her back.”

“Damn, that sucks. Sorry, man.”

I squeeze the bridge of my nose and make a face. “Think Willow will be mad?”

“Nah.” He shakes his head. “I’ll explain. Go ahead and go. I’ll talk to you later.” He squeezes my shoulder, trying to give me some comfort. “I hope everything is okay.”

I offer him a smile, mostly because I know Kaspian is watching. “Thanks. I appreciate it.”

He disappears inside and I go back to my phone as I spin around and walk away.

802-555-9066:His hand will go first.

I laugh aloud, and it’s the first genuine laugh I’ve had in a while. Kaspian’s craziness is amusing.

Me:Where are you?

I turnthe corner and get almost all the way down Park Avenue without a response. I have to walk another block and a half before I get to Willow’s street so I can retrieve my car.

“Here I am,” Kaspian says, appearing at my side.

I try to hide my jolt as best I can. I didn’t see him coming. “You’re a crazy person, you know that?”

His smile is evil. “Yes.”

I shake my head. “Where’s my present?”

“Oh, so you want it?”

“Why must you play these games?” I say through an exhale.

“Did you get tired of Will? Decided I offered a little more excitement?”

“That wasn’t Will, and he’s straight, if you must know.”

“Right. Seemed very flirty tonight. Lots of laughter, winking, touching.” His jaw clenches as he stares at me.

“How long were you watching me tonight?”
