“Exactly.”

“I can understand that.”

I bet you can.

I sit back and scoot over since he’s too close to my left and I want to be able to see him fully. I figure now’s as good a time as ever to ask him the same type of questions.

“What about you? What’s your type? One of them?” I ask, tilting my bottle in the direction of the women.

His eyes peruse them carefully. “Uh, I’m not sure.”

Before I can ask anything else, he sits up and rests his arm on the table, his eyes focused on me. “So you said you weren’t from here. Why’d you move to Soledad Square?”

There’s too much interest in his eyes. “Why did you?” I counter.

He shrugs. “I happened across this town and decided I liked it enough to give it a go.”

“Happened across it? How does that happen?”

“I was traveling. Stopped here for a night. One turned to two, two into three. You get it.”

I nod. “I see.” He’s answering without giving much away and it’s driving me insane.

“Where did you come from?”

“West coast area,” I reply before taking a drink.

“California?”

“Why do people think the west coast consists only of California?”

“Because it’s the biggest state. So, Oregon or Washington?”

I shake my head. “You’re asking all these questions and I don’t even know your name,” I lie, needing to change directions.

“Oh.” He chuckles. “Kaspian. You can call me Kas.”

“I’m Ezra.”

“I know who you are.”

His tone flips when he says those five words, but I try not to let it get to me. “Stalking me already?”

“Just curious.”

“Why?”

“Why were you so interested in me and what I was doing with that woman?”

“I have reasons.”

“Care to share?”

I take another gulp of my beer and put it down on the table. “You know, I think I remember seeing you with another girl in town.”

He leans back. “Oh yeah?”

I nod. “Yeah. She worked at Perfectly Convenient. I go there all the time for my cigarettes.”
