Jason cocks his head slightly. “Weird, because Cora and Sam are at The Hideout right now.”

Quin shrugs. “She took leave earlier this week. Said she was having a hard time dealing with something.”

Jason nods. “Probably Emerson. You know they’ve been talking about those girls who disappeared? Our friend has been gone for a little while too, but Willow said she got a text from her saying she was going home because of some family problems. I guess she told Cora that she was starting to worry that didn’t actually happen, because she hasn’t been responding to any texts or answering calls, but sometimes people shut down when there’s a death in the family.”

He seems to shrug off the whole thing and doesn’t appear to have any concerns about Emerson, which works for us.

Once again, Quin finds the opportunity to bring up his situation.

“Yeah, that’s true. Just so you know, I’m leaving town soon. Remember I told you about my dad? Well, things are bad. I need to go home and help my mom and start planning a funeral. So, I likely won’t be attached to my phone either.”

Jason’s lips part. “Oh, dude. That sucks. I’m sorry, man.”

Quin waves it off. “It’s fine. I’ll be okay. Kas is coming with me.”

I watch as Jason’s expression changes from pity to confusion and then shock before finally settling into a blank-faced nod. “Oh. Ohh. So, you two…”

He looks at me and I wink at him. “You had your chance.”

Jason blushes before turning to Quin. “Wow. Well, okay. You both should still come to the Christmas sweater party. A little sendoff party.”

Quin looks at me and I know he wants me to get him out of it, but it’s probably something we should do, even if it’s only briefly.

“Yeah, we’ll see you there.”

“Great!”

“I’m going to hurt you,” Quin groans once Jason walks off.

“Promise?”

ChapterThirty-Eight

It’s nearly ten-thirty when our last-minute farewell party takes a turn. Initially, everything was normal. We all shared a round of shots, the bar held their ugly sweater contest and crowned a winner, and we sat at our table with our drinks, talking and laughing.

It took about an hour and a half for the news to spread about me and Kas being together. There were a few new people around who we hadn’t been around previously, and they didn’t seem to care either way. It was new information to Cora, Sam, and BJ, however. The girls were fine with it, but BJ remained quiet.

For the last half hour, he’s been watching us with silent disdain. The look on his face lets us know how he feels, but we’re not trying to focus on him. We’ll be out of here soon enough.

“Sorry about BJ, man,” Jason says when he sits next to me. “He’s always been a dick, so I’m not really surprised.”

“Oh, so you see the homophobic rays beaming off of him, too?” Kas asks.

Jason snorts, but it doesn’t hold much humor.

We watch as BJ reaches out and grabs Samantha’s arm, yanking her down so he can something in her ear. Her face reveals her surprise and anger, and then her eyes flicker in our direction before she quietly says something back to him.

“He’s talking shit,” Kas says quietly, the fury in his eyes burning bright.

The two of them continue to argue quietly at the end of the long table before she snatches her arm away from him.

“I’m not staying here with these two fucking fags.”

Jason whirls around and looks at us with wide eyes, but Kas and I stay focused on the argument on the end of the table.

“Then fucking leave,” Samantha says before rushing off toward the bathroom.
