Two months later

“You interested?” Vicente asks as soon as we get home.

I step out of my heels and hang my purse on the hook next to the front door. “Are you kidding? I’d be stupid to turn this down, but—”

He grabs me by the hips and spins me around. “But what, amorcito?”

I cross my wrists behind his neck as I stare into his eyes. “I feel like I’m getting a hookup. Like I didn’t work for it.”

“Did you take and pass all your classes?”

“Yes, but…”

“Have you been working under Chef Robert for months?”

I sigh. “Yes, but that’s not—”

“Are you saying you’re not qualified to be in the kitchen?”

“No,” I reply with a stern tone, my eyebrows furrowing.

He chuckles. “You’ve earned this job, and you’re not taking it from someone more deserving. Yes, Kyler is part of the family. Yes, this is a connection you wouldn’t have if it wasn’t for your relationship with me, but sometimes, Mariella, you take what you’re given and you make the best of the situation.”

I chew on my lip as I think. “Well, it’s not like it’s the head chef position.”

“Exactly, you’re not even the sous chef. You’re third in line. It’s almost like you’re not important at all.”

I twist my mouth at him. “Chef de partie is pretty important.”

His brow arches. “Chef de partie, huh?”

“Mmhmm.”

“Sounds like it’s already yours.”

“Okay, fine. I’ll take the job.”

He kisses me. “Good, then we should celebrate.”

“It doesn't even start for another month and a half.”

“You don’t want to celebrate with me?” he asks, removing his tie with a wicked grin.

“Well, I didn’t say that.” My phone rings, jolting me out of the moment. “Sorry. One sec.”

Vicente dips his head but his hands go to the button on my pants. “Go ahead.”

I pull the phone from my back pocket and answer it. “Hello?”

“Hey, baby.”

“Oh, hey, Mom.”

Vicente still doesn’t stop, pulling my pants down my legs.

“Is Vicente there?”

“Yes, he’s here.”
