I exhale. I haven’t checked my phone in a while. “Sorry. It’s a crazy story, but yeah. After I texted you about spilling coffee on myself, Vicente—”

“Vicente? The owner? The crime guy?”

“Uhh, yeah. Well, he got me out of work, because I ran into him with the coffee and he said I shouldn’t be working.”

“Okay,” she says, dragging the word out with some skepticism.

“But he said he had a job for me. Something that he’d pay me for since I was complaining about missing out on hours.”

“Mmhmm.”

“So, he said he had an event and needed me to go with him.”

“What kind of event?”

“He had a club opening.”

“Oh,” she says, sounding surprised. “That’s cool. Where is it?”

“Briton.”

“Briton? Aren’t you from there?”

“Yeah, but the club isn’t a regular club. It’s a sex club.”

“What?!” she screeches.

“I know!”

“You’re in a fucking sex club?”

“Yeah, but I’m in an office right now.”

“Well, that’s boring. Where’s the boss?”

“He left. Some guys came in and he rushed out. I think something’s going on.”

“Like, mob stuff?” Her voice gets serious. “Shit, Mariella.”

“I don’t know. I was thinking maybe he was going legit. I mean, he owns a casino and now this club. People can stop being in the mafia, right?”

“I mean, I guess. I don’t really know how it works. Does he know that you know?”

“No way. How would I even bring that up?”

“I don’t know, but I doubt he’s done with that life. Noah was telling me some other stuff about that crime family. It’s probably best if you steer clear. Working in the casino is one thing but having a relationship of any sort with the guy is gonna draw you deeper into his world.”

“I just have to do one more thing for him tomorrow and then I should be clear.”

A loud scream penetrates the air before it goes quiet.

“What was that?” Autumn asks.

I stand up and face the door. “I don’t know.” My heart leaps into my throat. “Someone screamed.”

Bangs and scuffles follow before it goes silent again.

“What’s happening?” Autumn whispers.
