“Oh. Yeah,” Autumn replies.

I’m frozen in place, a shirt dangling from my fingertips when she comes back through the doorway, her eyes wide and eyebrows raised. “Oh my god,” she mouths, the words barely leaving her lips as she fans herself.

I roll my eyes and drop the garment in the suitcase before I start walking toward the living room. He looks out of place in my apartment as he inspects the area, standing near the door with his hands in his pockets.

When he spots me, he speaks. “Did you need any help?” he questions, keeping his tone friendly for Autumn’s sake.

“Oh, a question?” I say in a teasing tone.

His brow arches and the smile he gives me is tight. He’s trying to be on his best behavior. “I can help you pack.”

“Aww, that’s nice,” Autumn says, making her way to the kitchen sink to rinse out a glass. “Do you want something to drink, Mr. Moreno?”

“No, I’m good. Thank you.”

He takes a step toward me, his hand going to the middle of my back to spin me around. He then herds me into my room. “Make sure you have everything you’ll need.” Once inside, he closes the door enough to mute our conversation, but not all the way. “I didn’t know your roommate was here.”

“I didn’t either,” I reply

“I hope you didn’t say anything you shouldn’t have,” he says, pinning me with a glare.

“Does it seem like she knows you killed someone?” I ask, annoyance in my voice as I move to my underwear drawer.

He’s at my back before I even realize he’s moved. His breath tickles my ear as he says, “It doesn’t seem like you know, even though you saw me covered in blood. Your attitude is going to get you in trouble, Mariella.” My spine stiffens and goosebumps cover my arms. I hate how much I love the way my name sounds coming from his mouth. It does things to me I can’t explain. “Unless that’s what you want.” His mouth brushes against my neck when he turns his head to the side and runs his nose behind my ear, up into my hair. “Do I need to put you in your place?”

I shake my head once, my chest heaving with deep breaths.

“No?” His hand squeezes my hip before he pulls it away and spanks me.

I gasp loudly, feeling the sting of his palm on my ass. His other hand covers my lips. “I think you might like it.”

“Ella?” Autumn’s voice calls out.

He removes his hand, and I reply. “Yeah?”

“You okay?”

I clear my throat. “Yeah. All good.”

Vicente reaches around me and into the open drawer, pulling out a red pair of lace panties. “Bring these. You’ll look sexy in red.”

He walks to the window and peeks out while I have to take several seconds to get myself together before I finish packing.

This man has a power I don’t quite understand. He holds the strings I didn’t even know were connected to me. His fingers know the notes of my body’s favorite melody, and nothing, not even fear or morality can keep me from lusting after him.

I force confidence I don’t feel right now and say, “For the record, I look sexy in any color, or nothing at all.”

He bites down on his lip, a grin pulling the corners of his mouth up at the sides. He looks boyish and adorable, making my stomach flutter.

“Prove it.”

And he’s back.

I roll my eyes and quickly make my way to the bathroom to grab everything I need from there. Autumn follows.

“Oh my god, he’s so hot in person.”

“Shh. You’ll inflate his already huge ego.”
