He’s giving me a choice. I could say no, but what would that mean? I have a feeling that choosing to wear it would be making a bigger decision than an accessory decision.

I nod once. “Yes.”

A sigh, whether one of relief or perhaps disappointment, passes through his lips. “Let me put it on you.”

Once it’s clasped, he maneuvers me over to his dresser where a mirror rests on top. He stands behind me, hands in his pockets as I stare at myself. The necklace is perfect for this dress and it’s so decadent and unlike anything I’ve ever had.

I touch the dangling heart as it spins, remembering the words etched into the back that’ll be pressed against my skin.

“This dress,” he says with a husky voice. “I can’t get over it.” He bends down and the warm, wet tip of his tongue traces up my spine.

“Why are you teasing me?” I ask with a whine.

“I’ll make it up to you.”

I turn around and face him. “I’m not wearing any underwear tonight.”

His brow arches. “I’ll keep that in mind.”

ChapterTwenty-Five

His demeanor changes slightly as our time in the car stretches to nearly half an hour. Vicente fidgets in his seat—something I’ve never seen him do. He types on his phone quite a lot, huffing often. I assume it’s work related and probably something I don’t need nor want to know.

Eventually, his driver pulls up in front of a restaurant named Roma’s, right inside the borough of Briton.

Vicente exits the vehicle, coming around to my side to open my door and help me out.

“We’re having dinner?” I ask, looking up and down the street.

“Not like you think. The restaurant’s been reserved for a private party.”

“Oh.”

It’s not a lot of information, but again, it’s not my job or business, so I don’t press.

Vicente looks at his watch before pulling his phone from his pocket while we continue to stand on the street. Only a few seconds go by before two men round the corner, dressed in nice suits with gold rings on their fingers.

Angry blue eyes look me up and down as do dark and dangerous ones.

“I don’t know if I’ve ever formally introduced you,” Vicente says to me. “This is Tommy and Jian.”

I force a smile and give them a nod. “Nice to meet you.”

Tommy snorts and Jian’s lips curl on one end. Neither believe that I think it’s nice to meet them, and they’d be right, but I’m not about to be rude.

“You ready, boss?” Jian asks.

“Let’s go,” he says, walking toward the door with his hand on my lower back.

When we get past the door, we find ourselves faced with a young man that hardly looks old enough to drink. He steps in front of Jian and Tommy who lead our group. With a hand in the air to stop us, he looks us up and down.

“What the hell are you doing here?” he questions.

He attempts to sound authoritative, but his fidgety steps and wandering eyes showcase his nerves. He’s looking around for someone else. Someone who’s more adult than he is, but he’s afraid to keep his gaze off of the men in front of him for too long.

Tommy steps up to him, nearly touching his nose to his. “We were invited. Do you want to question your boss? Do you want us to cause a scene at your party that you hold so dear? Hmm?”

Nothing about Tommy is soft. His face remains tight, eyes narrow, jaw clenched. He slides his hands into the pockets of his slacks, his suit jacket opening slightly.
