“Hmm. That’s convenient.” I don’t believe they ran off for a second. “And the other? The first one?”

“What do you want?” he asks, a bite in each word.

“Just one or two things.” I slip my hands in my pockets and walk around the desk, sitting in the manager’s chair. “I want you to put an end to your people trying to bring my business down. ENMY will remain where it is without any interference from you, and you’ll stop trying to steal our cocaine business.”

“I can’t ignore the business,” he shouts. “I told you why. I will talk to my people about the cocaine.”

“Khalid and I have agreed to help make sure nobody else tries to encroach on your territory. ENMY will remain the only outside business there.”

“I can’t trust you.”

“God,” I say with a sigh, dropping my head back. “The things I’ve done to Mariella. You’d be disgusted.”

“Stop it.”

“She’s not at all what she looks like. She appears so innocent, but my god, Donati, some of your disgusting nature must’ve passed down to her. You should’ve heard what she wants me to do to her later.”

“That’s enough!”

I smile at him. “Your daughter. The one you abandoned, along with her mother. Guess she needed a father figure. It’s a good thing she found me.”

He swipes a hand across the desk, papers and pens flying everywhere. “Leave her out of this.”

“Why do you care?” I ask with amusement. “It’s not like you know her. Hell, you two didn’t even recognize each other. How does that feel?”

“I did what was best for her!”

“Would she agree? Should we ask her?”

“Nobody can know about her,” he seethes. “She’d be a target. I have the fucking Russians on my ass. You let this slip, Moreno, and I’ll fucking kill you.”

“Well, as it happens, a few people know. My people. If something happens to me, they’ll tell every enemy you have about her. If you think what I’m doing to her is bad, just imagine it being done by someone she doesn’t like, by someone she doesn’t consent to. Imagine the brutality and anger they’ll release on her simply for being related to you. I gotta say, it was hard to put it out of my head for a while. Your blood runs in her veins, and I’ve wanted to drain them myself. I think this is better though. You get to live with the knowledge of what I do to her. She’s got my mark on her. She wears a collar for me. You saw it, didn’t you? The tag that’s a constant reminder of who she belongs to.”

His lip curls in disgust. “You’re fucking depraved.”

“Yes, but so is she.”

“What else do you want?”

“I want to kill Alberto.”

For the first time since we’ve been here, he shows an emotion besides anger. He’s genuinely surprised. His face softens as his brows shoot up.

“Are you fucking serious?”

“Yes,” I say, standing up and rounding the desk.

“He’s done with this life. He’s enjoying his years somewhere far from here.”

“I’m aware, but he doesn’t deserve to do so. Before you took over, he was the one in charge, and while he was, he made a grave mistake. He killed my mother.”

Donati sighs, looking away. He’s not surprised, but he seems frustrated that I found out. “It was business, Moreno. Your mother—”

I snatch a letter opener off the desk and rush toward him, the point at the hollow of his throat. “Don’t say shit about my mother.”

He stares at me for a few seconds before responding. “It wasn’t personal.”

“It felt really fucking personal when she was ripped from my life at the age of thirteen, shot down outside the grocery store with me by her side.”
